Last update: 14 March 2019

This section of the Stellaris guide contains the most important information regarding army management and the availability of various types of military units.

The majority of actions in the game will be performed by fleets of different size and type. However, you should not underestimate the meaning of land units, as they will be your last resort after a lost battle. That is why, it is important to equip your troops with appropriate arms. Each unit can be assigned to a different leader, who can be recruited in the army section.

Remember that you will need assault units that will begin the invasion on an enemy planet. Although planet invasion is not obligatory to win a war, it will help you defeat your opponent, as a lot of points are given for a successful occupation.

You will need transport ships to move your assault armies across the galaxy. These ships have weak fire power, so it is important to protect them during long journeys. On the other hand, transport ships can travel a lot faster than fleets, so be very careful about giving orders to your troops. It is common that a transport ship will get ahead of you fleet and run into enemy ships. There is a chance that you will survive, but land units that receive damage are often unable to fight when they get off the ship. Such invasions are likely to fail.

You should order your fleet to move first, and only when you are sure there are no enemy ships nearby, repeat the action with your transport ships.

Before you begin the invasion, you should destroy the enemy spaceport. Destroy the station and then focus on fortifications. Depending on the type of firearms, it may take a while. You will not succeed as long as there are fortifications. Each fleet has a separate setting concerning its range of shooting. Some options can be politically blocked, so you may want to check if you are unable to use the desired setting.

Destroy fortifications and begin the invasion. Use "armies" section to monitor the battle. You should send units that deal a lot of damage, but remember that you will encounter militia on every planet, who will defend the land.

If you decide on a unit that you want to use, you should hire a general who will command it. This way the army will get additional boosts. One general is enough to command several units. Every troop that joins the battle will receive his boost.

Morale is often key to success. A unit with high morale can deal with a much stronger enemy. Morale level defines the effectiveness of damage.
