Sea of Thieves: Chests, types, tips Sea Of Thieves guide, walkthrough
Last update: 13 July 2020
The Sea of Thieves chests are one of the main means of obtaining gold pieces. In most cases, you will find them in the missions of the Gold Hoarders faction, but they also occur randomly in various places on the islands and at sea, near sunken wrecks. The most valuable ones can be taken out of the treasury of the captain of pirates, after defeating all the opponents during the public event - Skeleton Fort. You will see the name of the box by approaching it.
The price of crates in Sea of Thieves is an extremely important part of the economy, as their price can change even after the smallest update is introduced.
- Regular Chests
- Ashen Treasure Chests
- Ghostly and Skeleton Chests
- Cursed Chests
- Shipwreck Treasure Chests
Regular Chests
Regular chests are the most commonly found type of chest in Sea of Thieves. They look not particularly appealing and do not stand out in any particular way, and of course, they are not as valuable as rare chests. At the time of writing this guide you can find the following ordinary treasure chests in Sea of Thieves:
- Castaway's Chest: 60-130 gold (most common);
- Seafarer's Chest: 140-260 gold (normal chest);
- Marauder's Chest: 280-520 gold (average value);
- Captain's Chest: 580-1,100 gold (rarest).
Ashen Treasure Chests
Each of the Regular Chests also has its own more valuable variety in purple called Ashen Treasure Chests, which can usually be found at The Devil's Roar. At the time of writing this guide you can find the following Ashen Treasure Chests in Sea of Thieves:
- Ashen Castaway's Chest: 140-260 gold (most common);
- Ashen Seafarer's Chest: 280-520 gold (slightly higher value);
- Ashen Marauder's Chest: 580-1 100 gold (medium value);
- Ashen Captain's Chest: 1 100-2 100 gold (rarest).
Ghostly and Skeleton Chests
Ghostly Chests are special spectral chests that can be acquired after defeating Ghost Ships that have arrived in the waters of Sea of Thieves from Sea of Damned. Skeleton Chests are higher-value chests that can be obtained after defeating a skeleton ship or after a successful attack on a skeleton fort.
- Chest of the Damned: 1,000-1,150 gold (obtainable after defeating a Ghost Ship);
- Skeleton Captain's Chest: 850-1,500 gold (obtainable after defeating a Skeleton Ship);
- Stronghold Chest: 1,500-3,000 gold (obtainable after a successful attack on a skeleton fort).
Cursed Chests
Cursed Chests are rare high-value chests, but unfortunately, they are cursed. Bringing such a crate to a port may cause many problems. At the time of writing of this guide, the following cursed crates can be found in SoT:
- Chest of a Thousand Grogs: 2,200-2,600 gold (when moving this chest the player character automatically becomes drunk and wobbles on his feet);
- Chest of Sorrow: 3,000-3,500 gold (The chest laments and cries from time to time when onboard the ship. Tears from this crate are pouring down streams and can sink the ship at a rapid rate, so the crew must take care to continually pour water overboard);
- Chest of Rage: 3,000-3,500 gold (this cursed chest overheats every now and then and can explode setting everything around it on fire. While carrying such a crate, someone must have a bucket of water ready and, if necessary, pour it on the crate in order to cool it).
Shipwreck Treasure Chests
Shipwreck Treasure Chests are special versions of ordinary treasure chests that can only be found inside shipwrecks, skeleton ships, and shipwrecks on land. The value of the crates found in shipwrecks is the same as their ordinary counterparts.
- Shipwrecked Castaway's Chest: 60-130 gold (most common);
- Shipwrecked Seafarer's Chest: 140-260 gold (ordinary chest);
- Shipwrecked Marauder's Chest: 280-520 gold (average value);
- Shipwrecked Captain's Chest: 580-1,100 gold (rarest).
