Sea of Thieves
An action adventure game focusing on multiplayer, set in an open world filled with pirates, treasures and exotic lands to explore. It is a work of the experienced studios Rare – creators of such classic series as Donkey Kong and Banjoo-Kazooie.

Sea of Thieves is an open-world pirate MMO game. The title was developed by the legendary studio Rare, one of the oldest British developers. The company previously created famous series like Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie and Killer Instinct. After Rare was bought by Microsoft, it became less important and during the last few years, it mostly developed Kinect Sports series. Sea of Thieves was announced during E3 2015 and it debuted more than two years later on Xbox One and PC.
Plot
In Sea of Thieves the players assume the role of corsairs and they participate in various pirate activities like swimming through seas and oceans, looking for treasures and fighting monsters and other pirates. The game’s tone isn’t very serious and the life under the black flag is presented in a humorous way.
Mechanics
The game takes place in an open world. The players can freely explore it on foot and by using ships. The action is presented from a first-person perspective. The gameplay is played like a sandbox – the players aren’t facing any specific objectives. During the game, they can focus on various main and side activities and complete missions for selected faction. The main attractions are adventures of groups of players and cooperation in controlling ships where each crew member is responsible for different tasks, for example, steering, raising and dropping the anchor etc. During exploration, players can also frequently face rival groups and participate in naval battles. Here players additionally must manage cannons and repair damage to the ship. During calmer moments the pirates can drink grog or sing various pirate songs.
Game modes
Sea of Thieves can be played only in multiplayer mode. However, the players won’t encounter other people too frequently in the open world. The gameplay is focused on cooperation mode. Players are creating groups that cooperate with each other when it comes to controlling the ship, looking for treasures or fighting. At the same time groups are competing with other pirate parties.
Technical aspects
Sea of Thieves for features detailed, fully three-dimensional graphics. The visuals utilize cartoon-like style filled with pirate humor. The game is part of the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative – if a player buys it on one of the available platforms, he or she receives an additional copy for the other platform. The game is also available as part of the Xbox Game Pass service. Achievements, gameplay progress and the additional content are synchronized between the platforms via Xbox Life service.
