Getting a mop is one of the main tasks in Part 1 in Return to Monkey Island. The following walkthrough explains, among other things, how to build your own mop and how to pass the puzzles with the map to the Mop Tree and writing an apology to Carla.

One of the things you have to do in the first chapter of Return to Monkey Island, is to get a mop. The walkthrough from our guide explains, among others, how to build a mop, how to solve the puzzle of writing an apology to the governor, how to get a cookbook, how to go through the forest by using the map from Wally and how to get a handle and a mop tip.

Get a mop

This is one of the tasks that you will receive after meeting the Quartermaster at LeChuck's ship. We described this conversation on the Talk to Pirate Leaders page.

The finished mop is in the kitchen of the SCUMM Bar - the entrance to the kitchen is to the right of the table where the pirate leaders are sitting. Talk to the cook. The mop is at the door, but you can't pick it up (with right click). You will learn from the cook that you have to make your own mop and you will need 2 parts - an end and a handle made of the right type of wood.

Freeing Otis from prison

Once inside, you will meet the governor - Carla. You can choose any answers, because this won't be another swordfighting mini-game.

Examine the books on the estate and try to get any of them. Carla tells you that she is angry with Guybrush for not returning the book he borrowed. You will have to apologize to her.

Puzzle - Writing an apology to Carla

The next step is more difficult - you have to prepare a correct apology and it requires you to find clues related to Carla in the city. These hints can be random.

The first clue is Carla's poster to the left of SCUMM Bar in the docks. Read the poster and remember the motto (in our example it was Tough on Toughness, but you can get a different one).

Reach the Governor's Mansion. Open your inventory and use the Pen on the frog. This will allow you to start writing your apology.

The apology consists of 5 parts:

  1. The first part is always the same - Dear Carla.
  2. The second part is always the same - Sorry for losing the book I borrowed.
  3. The third part can be read from the statue's badge in Low Street (Tough on Toughness in our example)
  4. The fourth part can be read from the poster in the docks (Port Elizabeth in our example).
  5. The fifth part is always the same - I promise to do better in the future.

If you chose all 5 options correctly, Carla will accept Guybrush's apology. If you make a mistake, you can correct the apology any number of times.

Return to the SCUMM Bar in the docks. There are two new people in the bar. One of them is Clean-Looking Pirate. You will learn from him that he is waiting for a specific meal to be prepared.

Go to the kitchen and talk to the cook. He doesn't know how to prepare the dish, but you can help him - give him the Ingredients book that you took from the governor's mansion (make sure it is the book with the correct title).

The cook will start preparing the meals - this will distract him. Select the knife from the inventory (the one you bought from the Voodoo Lady) and use it on the mop. Thanks to this, you will obtain a Sliver of Wood.

You can also try to steal the mop and escape from the SCUMM Bar. The cook would stop you on your way out - doing this will unlock a secret achievement.

Go back to Wally's Maps-n-More on Low Street. Choose the sliver of wood from the inventory and show it to Wally. You will receive a Map to the Mop Tree.

Puzzle - Mop Tree in the forest

Reach the Forest and enter it. You can view the map by selecting it from the inventory - it has a puzzle.

The game may give you a different map from the one shown in the above picture - you have to learn how the puzzle works. You need to choose passages based on the types of plants on the map.

You have to start in 1 (the first location on the map) and reach 9 (the location with the big tree for making a mop). Always check the color of the plant next to the path leading to the next point and choose the paths in the forest accordingly.

In the example from our picture, the correct paths were next to the following plants: purple, purple, green, blue, blue, blue, green, purple.

Make a mop
