New technologies in Oxygen Not Included at first seem like a minor addiction to the game. However, as you play more they become one of the most important aspects of the game. With the growth of the colony, expansion of its size and increase of the number of duplicants, you will need better technologies. Duplicants require good living conditions. The first research should focus on trees that enable producing food and electricity, then you should provide a transportation of gases and liquids. To do it, you will need two buildings from the Stations tab: Research Station and Super Computer. They will enable you to unlock more technologies by using points. There are three types of points in the game. The basic ones are obtained for 100kg of Sandstrone. Intermediate are obtained for 25kg of water and advanced are obtained through the Command Capsule. Currently, the game features a bug that makes it impossible to obtain the latter. The basic technologies cost 15 regular points. Cost of each next technology gradually increases. More advanced technologies also require intermediate and advanced points, although reaching the advanced ones will take you some time.
(1) The first tree is the most important branch of survival - food gathering. There are two branches here. The shorter one is Farming and the longer one is Ranching. Farming enables you to grow plants that are mostly used for obtaining food. Ranching focuses on breeding animals that can be tamed if you have a duplicant with a special skill. Ranching is definitely more effective and advanced method of obtaining food than farming. Ranching also enables you to obtain derived products that will be useful in future versions of the game. Before expanding one of the branches, you will unlock the ability to create meals with a special machine.
(2) The second tree is focused on energy gathering. It is one of the two longest trees in the game. Here you will first unlock automated ways of gathering energy like Coal Generator. Later this tree will provide you with possibility to produce energy with engines and various fuels that can be created from resources. These technologies enable you to create a fully automated system of gathering and managing energy.
(3) The third one is focused on duplicants, their work, and gathering new resources. Here you can unlock Advanced Research, Skill Board, Metal Rafinery. You should invest into this tree as it enables you to greatly speed up the development of your colony.
(4) Number four is focused on medicine and health. It is one of the shortest trees. Here you can unlock buildings like Apothecary, Sick bay, and Hand Sanitizer. With this tree you will secure the health of your duplicants and avoid them getting sick.
(5) Here you will find technologies related to hydraulics and liquid transportation. You should develop it when you have surplus of liquids or a remote water tank. One of the more complicated technology.
(6) Ventillation is another complicated technology. You should develop it simultenously with hydraulics as they both meet each other in the final technology - Jetpack. You should invest in this technology when various gases are mixed or when you intend to remove toxic substances from the air. This technology is hard to control, especially on your first try.
(7) Decorations enable you ti improve morale of the duplicants. Here, you will unlock various furniture, decorations, and stations for sculpturing and painting. Depending on how many duplicants you have and what is your play style, you should develop the first two branches, or at least the first one. Lamps will be needed when growing some plants.
