Fans persist in porting older GTA installments to newer series' engines despite Rockstar's disapproval
The developers of the Vice City: The NextGen Edition mod announced that the final version will be released this week. The project ported GTA: Vice City to the Grand Theft Auto IV engine.
Rockstar Games has an unpleasant tendency to "shut down" fan projects, which are essentially updated versions of the studio's games. Mods introducing, for instance, better textures or models are still tolerated in many cases, but attempts to create unofficial remasters and remakes often end with the intervention of the company's lawyers.
In this way, a few days ago, the development of the Liberty City Preservation Project, which transferred the map from GTA IV to GTA V, was halted. However, even this isn't enough to stop the next mods and one of the promising projects of this type will get the final version later this week.
- We're talking about Vice City: The NextGen Edition, a modification that ports the entire GTA: Vice City to Grand Theft Auto IV.
- The word "entire" in this case isn't an exaggeration at all. The creators didn't limit themselves to just the world map but also recreated all the missions and collectibles in GTA 4, as well as transferred the music. In practice, this will therefore be an unofficial remaster of Vice City.
- The final version of the mod is set to be released this Saturday.
- Announcing the launch date, the devs also released a new trailer, which you can watch below.
So, there are only a few days left until the premiere, and for this reason, there is probably no need to fear that Rockstar Games' lawyers will manage to end this project. Even if the studio tries to do something about it in the future, the fact that it will happen after the release of the final version of Vice City: The NextGen Edition means that such actions will be ineffective because a mirror will always be found.
