Crisis in Civilization 7 Gives Players New Challenges and Keep Them from Getting Bored
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 will change a lot in the formula of the popular series, introducing not only a new system of Ages but also a crisis.
The Sid Meier's Civilization 7 developers revealed more details about the crisis that will impact players' virtual empires at the end of each age. Shaun Wilson, Associate QA Lead, talked about this in a short material published on X and YouTube.
We have already heard a bit about the crisis before. However, we were unable to test them in practice, but the developers from Firaxis studio hinted that this mechanic is supposed to be linked with the new Ages system. The change of civilization is supposed to be, in a way, the result of the fall of the old one - precisely in the face of crisis.
As Wilson revealed, the crisis will be unique to each of the three ages of the "seventh" Civilization and will be a random in-game event that will affect all nations in the game. In ancient times, there will be, among other things, plagues and invasions by barbarian tribes.
Each such crisis will have various consequences in the form of cards with special "regulations" that have positive and negative effects. These can include, among others, doubling the cost of maintaining troops or weakening their effectiveness in clashes with other nations, increasing the level of research at the expense of lower gold income, and reducing the level of satisfaction in cities for each level of leadership. Crisis will also affect the functioning of religion and access to resources.
Wilson didn't specify this, but some fans speculate that these "regulations" will be selectable since the screenshot shown by the developer mentions "available" options. The crisis will be another element adding variety to the game, especially in the last of the three ages of Civilization VII. They will provide a steadily increasing level of challenge with the decline of each age and slightly different experiences from each session.
Wilson didn't reveal much beyond what the players already knew or suspected from previous information provided by Firaxis Games. Perhaps we will learn more about the crisis from the next game showcase before its release.
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 will be released on February 11, 2025, on PC, PS5, and XSX/S.
