Civilization 7 without modern times on day one. Firaxis discussed modern age
New information on Sid Meier's Civilization 7 includes details of the modern age, new leaders (and so-called personas), and victory conditions.
We have learned the details of the last stage of the game in Sid Meier's Civilization 7: the modern age. Developers from Firaxis Games studio organized another long stream, during which they discussed the most important features of the third age in the new Civilization for over an hour and a half.
Besides the stream, the devs have updated the series’ official website with new articles, including a look at two new leaders (or “visionaries”): Benjamin Franklin and Harriet Tubman. The disclosure of the latter sparked lively, though not completely comprehensible, reactions. Allegedly, this is connected to the fact that she wasn't a "leader" in political or military terms, with the most extreme internet users attempting to deny the abolitionist's existence (to the dismay of many people).
Ancient contemporary times
The modern age will start in 1750, featuring rockets as the newest technology (besides, in line with the series' traditions, futuristic research). Interestingly, this period will formally end in the 1960s. Modern times won't be available in the game on day one but will be added in the future.
The devs also mentioned the victory conditions, which can be achieved on one of the four Legacy Paths: military, diplomatic, scientific, and economic. Each of them culminates in an ambitious project, such as sending the first person into space or establishing the World Bank.
Furthermore, the developers mentioned additional changes, both significant and minor, such as managing intelligence from the diplomacy menu (players will no longer recruit spies), available ideologies in the modern age (communism, democracy, and fascism, each with its own research tree), and the option to allocate factory resources to settlements, resulting in various bonuses.
The devs also clarified the issue of available civilizations. As it turns out, out of the 31 leaders for the release, 5 will be the so-called personas. These immediately reminded players of the Echo Fighters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: variants of other characters with slightly different appearances and traits (even if, in a Nintendo game, the latter differences are usually negligible or absent).
The Firaxis Games team also confirmed that players will soon see the 5th episode of the developer's diary, and after Christmas in 2025, we will learn about more "new features." For now, the creators have also released a short video discussing diplomacy and influence.
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 will be released on February 11, 2025, on PC, PS5, and XSX/S.
