„Amazing Time” and Chaos in Game Industry - Helldivers 2 Devs Comment on „Dire Situation” for Developers and Publishers
The production director of Helldivers 2 has joined developers commenting on the current situation in the game industry in the context of massive layoffs.
The team at Arrowhead Game Studios won several honors at this year's Golden Joystick Awards. However, while receiving awards for its game, the studio focused on more than just its own success. The devs of Helldivers 2 mentioned the "dire state" of the gaming industry and called for "helping each other."
Alex Bauwl, the director of Helldivers 2 production, mentioned this in an interview at the event. The Swede admitted that while it's an "amazing time" for gamers in terms of upcoming games, it's not a good period for the industry as a whole (via GamesRadar).
It's so important to take the time to acknowledge that games are being released and it's such an amazing time…but we need to be conscious that the games industry is in turmoil, and we need to be there to help each other.
It's not hard to guess what Bauwl was referring to. For over a year now, we have been reporting on consecutive layoffs and closed businesses, as well as criticism and potential causes of the ongoing crisis, in which more than 25,000 people have lost their jobs in the past two years (including 14,000 in 2024 only).
The director of HD 2 production didn't explain how this "helping each other" would manifest, although we can guess that one of the forms could be creating jobs by the studios currently at the top (although not everyone would probably approve of such an idea).
