Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain allows you to upload your experience from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which is the game that can be treated as a prologue. Later in the text, you can find instructions on how to do that. But, before you start that, there are several things to know:

  • You do not need to worry that you miss out on something, in The Phantom Pain, if you haven't yet played Ground Zeroes. In Ground Zeroes, you do not make any decisions important for the story and the rewards that you receive in The Phantom Pain do not affect the campaign in any significant way (there are no additional missions, for example).
  • It is only possible to upload between devices of the same "family" (PC - Steam, Sony consoles, Microsoft consoles). For example, you can copy your saved files from PS4 over to another PS4, from Xbox One to another Xbox One, from PS3 to another PS4, or from Xbox 360 over to another Xbox One. You cannot copy your save files from PC to a PS3 or from a PS4 over to Xbox One.
  • You can perform the upload at any point. You do not need to do this at all costs, when you are starting to play The Phantom Pain. You receive rewards for the successful upload after you end the mission (if you have been playing one), after you return to the chopper or to the Mother Base.
  • You can repeat the uploading process if, for example, from the moment of the last upload, you made a progress in MGS V Ground Zeroes and improved on the game completion of the game.
