Glossary Gwent Guide

Last update: 06 July 2017

The following glossary contains terms that the player comes across while playing Gwent. Learning them is especially advisable for beginners.

  • Damage - Decreasing a unit's Power. Power of Damaged units is indicated in red.
  • Spawn - You create a card and play it immediately. For example, by playing Gremist, you can create one of the following cards: Impenetrable Fog, Clear Skies, or Bloodcurdling Roar.
  • Deploy - A unit's ability which is activated immediately after playing the card.
  • Highest/Lowest units - Some cards, like weather effects, influence those with the highest or the lowest amount of points. If there are several units of the same Power in the same row, then draws are resolved at random.
  • Resilience - A unit with this ability (e.g. Mahakam Defender or Ekimmara) stays on the board after the round has finished.
  • Destroy - Move a card to the graveyard.
  • Consume - Some units, such as Vran Warrior, can Consume another card's Power and boost itself by the consumed amount. If the consumed card comes from the hand or the deck, it is taken to the graveyard. If you Consume a unit from the graveyard, it's eliminated from the match.
  • Boost - Adds a given amount of Power to a selected unit. For example, Swallow gives 8 points of Power.
  • Lock - A locked united loses its passive ability. For example, a Locked Kaedweni Siege Support doesn't boost cards that appear on the board.
  • Demote - You lower a card's level (e.g. from Gold to Silver). In this way, you can influence cards that were previously intouchable. To Demote a unit, you can use, for example, Dimeritium Shackles.
  • Shield - Protect a unit from taking Damage. This effect blocks damage just once. An example card: Quen Sign.
  • Armor - Some units, like Redanian Elite, have Armor points in addition to Power points. In such a case, you won't be able to lower the unit's Power without destroying the Armor first. However, in the game, there are units that ignore Armor, for example, Coral.
  • Strengthen - Increase the Base Power of a unit. For example, Tordarroch Clan Shieldsmith has this ability.
  • Reset - Restore a unit's Power to the base amount. It can be done with, for example, Dimeritium Bomb.
  • Discard - Move a card from hand to the graveyard. For instance, Ermion allows you to draw 2 cards and then you have to discard two.
  • Banish - Completely remove a card from the game. Banished cards cannot be resurrected.
  • Resurrect - Restore a card from the graveyard to the board. It can be done by Priestess of Freya, for example.
  • Spy - A unit played to the opponent's side. An example of Spy is Emissary.
  • Doomed - The card is removed from the game once moved to the graveyard. An example: Sigrdrifa.
  • Fresh Crew - This card's ability is activated when placed adjacent to a unit with the Crewmen ability, for example: Ballista.
  • Crewmen - Such a unit activates the ability of a card with the Fresh Crew ability. For example, Blue Stripes Scout.
  • Trap - Such cards are played to the opponent's side. They remain hidden until a certain requirement is met. For example, Dol Blathanna Trapper creates the Fireball Trap card.
  • Veteran - Trigger this ability at the start of Rounds 2 and 3 when this card is in the Hand, Deck or Graveyard.
  • Trio - Three Unlocked cards of the same type in the same row.
  • Deathwish - The ability is activated when the unit is moved to the graveyard. An example: Nekker.
  • Mulligan - Swap a card for another.
  • Reveal - You reveal your or your opponent's card. Revealed cards are visible in hand until played or swapped.
  • Bond - The ability of such a unit is activated every time when you play an identical card on the same side. An example is Reaver Hunter.
  • Regressing - The base Power of such a unit, for example: Clan Brokvar Hunter, is restored to the original value when moved to the graveyard.
  • Heal - Restore a wounded unit's Power to the base value.
  • Countdown - Some units have an ability that is activated after a certain numer of turns, for example, Alba Pikemen summon an identical unit to the board after two turns.
  • Brave - Units from this group activate their ability if the opponent has an advantage at the moment when the card is played. For example, Chort boosts itself by 4 points.
  • Retaliation - The ability of such a unit is activated when it is wounded. Retaliation doesn't activate when the unit is moved to the graveyard. An example card with this ability is Raging Berserker.
  • Transform - A given unit is transformed into another. An example: Raging Berserker.
  • Move - Cards with this ability, like Drowner, can take a selected unit to another row.
  • Ambush - The card is played front to the bottom. It is activated when a certain requirement is met. An example: Vrihedd Sapers.

  • Ally - A unit on your side of the board.
