Every card, aside from rarity, has a function. To make things clear, cards in Gwent are divided into groups by their type, position, or in-game role. When you've just begun playing Gwent, it might seem complicated so it's a good idea to spare a moment to get acquainted with this system. Below, you can find all information you need.

Bronze cards

Bronze cards are the most common ones and also the most numerable in any deck - Card Groups | Card Types - Card Types - Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Guide

Bronze cards are the most common ones and also the most numerable in any deck. You can have up to 3 copies of a single one in a deck. Some of them have different visual variants (3 versions of the same card, like in the case of Wild Hunt Riders in the Monsters Faction or Queensguard in the Skellige Faction), but they serve the same purpose so it's a matter of aesthetics. Bronze cards are susceptible to all Event cards, both negative and positive, and therefore are easily boosted or weakened. The only exceptions are cards that have an additional property in the like of resistance to Frost that makes them immune to this weather effect. Bronze cards can be boosted by other buffing units.

Silver cards

Silver cards are more valuable than Bronze ones and also have additional unique skills - Card Groups | Card Types - Card Types - Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Guide

Silver cards are more valuable than Bronze ones and also have additional unique skills. You can have up to 6 Silver cards in a deck so you have to select only the most useful ones. Silver cards are also susceptible to Event cards, unless they have another unique skill like resistance to Fog. Silver cards can also be boosted by other units.

Gold cards

Gold cards have their own rules - Card Groups | Card Types - Card Types - Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Guide

Gold cards have their own rules. You can only have up to 4 such cards in your deck so you have to really think through their selection. These cards are immune to any kind of weather effects and other Events that drain attack points but, at the same time, cannot by boosted with elixirs or units. Gold cards often have very powerful skills, such as drawing extra cards or summoning additional units to the board. However, there are cards that can deal with these seemingly untouchable units. These are:

  1. Dimeritium Shackles - A Rare Bronze Neutral card. With it, you can turn a Gold card in to a Silver one and, at the same time, block its unique ability. A unit Demoted in this way is susceptible to all kinds of weather effects and other types of damage.
  2. Dimeritium Bomb - An Epic Silver Neutral card. It lets you choose 3 adjacent units and Lock them. If at least one of them is Gold, it becomes Demoted and Reset.

Leader cards

Leaders lead your army - Card Groups | Card Types - Card Types - Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Guide

Leaders lead your army. Every Faction has 3 Leaders that possess an additional skill that can be used only ONCE during the entire duel. These skills are various - they might boost, copy, or summon more units, weaken the opponent's cards or deck. You have to consider that some decks require a certain Leader to be maximally effective.
