Anno Video Game Series
A series of real-time economic strategies in which players build resilient cities in different realities and time periods. Since 2007, the brand has been owned by Ubisoft, and over the years its development has been handled by various development studios, led by Max Design, Related Designs and Ubisoft Blue Byte.
A brief history of the Anno series
The origins of the series date back to the late 1990s.. The first installment of the series - developed by Max Design Anno 1602: Creation of New World - was released on personal computers in 1998 and was very warmly received by RTS fans. For the sequel - Anno 1503: The New World - gamers had to wait four years. Subsequently, the role of developer of the series was taken over by Related Designs studio, which resulted in the next parts of the series: Anno 1701 (2006), Anno 1404 (2009) and Anno 2070 (2011), as well as the additions to them - Anno. Anno 1701: Curse of the Dragon i Anno 1404: Venice. Until now, games in the Anno series have been created only with PCs in mind, however Anno 1701 after a year of release also appeared on the Nintendo DS platform, while Anno 1404 found its way onto both the NDS and the Nintendo Wii.
In 2013, German studio Blue Byte prepared a browser-based spin-off of the series titled Anno Online, which ran until January 31, 2018. In 2014, through a small Mi'pu'mi studio founded by former Rockstar Games employees, and with the support of Blue Byte Software, another side-scrolling part of the series appeared, titled Anno: Build an Empire; the game was intended for iOS, although in 2015 it was ported to Android as well.
In 2015, the sixth full-fledged installment of the series, titled Anno 2205. Although initially its action was to be set in the Middle Ages, the developers at Blue Byte decided to move the player to the future, making it a sequel of sorts to Anno 2070. In 2019, the game set in the time of the Industrial Revolution hit the PC. Anno 1800, which lived to see numerous expansions, and almost four years later also appeared on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.. The year 2020 brought the release of the compilation Anno History Collection, containing refreshed versions of the first four installments of the series. In 2024, meanwhile, we lived to see the announcement of the eighth main installment of the series, namely. Anno 117: Pax Romana, transporting players to ancient Rome.
Gameplay in games of the Anno series
Gameplay in productions under the banner of Anno is mainly focused on the economic and social aspect.. During the game the main goal of the player is to build a rich city on an inhospitable terrain. This requires, first of all, the creation of efficient production chains, capable of satisfying the needs of settlers. There is also no shortage of challenges related to trade, diplomacy or military operations.
In the vast majority of games in the series, the historical background is related to the expansion of Western European civilization. The exceptions are Anno 2070 i Anno 2205, the action of which was set in the future. This treatment somewhat refreshed the series - this could be seen, for example, in the changed raw material system, as some of the previously available ones were removed and replaced with new ones. In addition to this Anno 2070 was the first part of the series, in which the player had the opportunity to direct three different, but not hostile factions - Echoes, Tech and Tycoons. Each of them was oriented towards a different path of development of the empire created by the player.
Most installments of the series Anno offers several modes of entertainment - single player and multiplayer (whether cooperative or competitive).
Graphics in the games of the Anno series
Initially, the games in the series Anno had fairly simple, though aesthetically pleasing 2D graphics with an isometric view. With the release of Anno 1701 there was a radical change in the visual layer and a move to a 3D graphical environment. At the time of its release, a kind of crowning achievement of the authors' efforts to improve the quality of graphics was Anno 1800, which even allowed to observe individual production processes (thanks to camera close-ups).
Naming of games in the Anno series
One of the biggest curiosities related to the games of the series Anno is their numbering. This is because the sum of the digits in the titles of these productions is always 9, which has become a hallmark of the series.
Although officially the reasons for this are unknown, it may have something to do with numerology, as in many cultures "nine" is considered a lucky digit. In addition, people who are numerological "nines" are supposed to be characterized by, among other things, altruism, idealism or humanitarianism, qualities that are very necessary for building resilient communities from the ground up; these may correspond with the spirit of settlement, and therefore the themes explored in the series.

Another installment in the popular economic strategy game series published by Ubisoft and developed since 2011 by Blue Byte Software - Ubisoft's subsidiary studio known for working on The Settlers series. Like the previous installments in the Anno series, set across various centuries of human history, in Anno 1800, the player assumes the role of a steward tasked with establishing a prosperous metropolis. One begins with a minor settlement inhabited by a handful of subjects, who have to gather resources, erect new buildings, and create complex trade relations allowing for the fast development of the city infrastructure. During the game, the player also has to tend to the needs of the settlers and properly balance the budget, which at times of crisis can be patched up with trading the goods and increasing taxes. Diplomacy is also an important aspect of the game, as it allows the player to establish various relations, enter alliances, and wage wars with the neighboring states.

This new title was developed by the creators of The Settlers franchise, Blue Byte Software, who took part in the development of the previous Anno game. This one lets you play as a governor of a huge futuristic metropolis, and you have to make it thrive till you can launch an expedition to the Moon. Initially, the game is set on Earth, but eventually you move to the surface of our planet’s satellite, where you set up a colony to harvest and process resources. Despite its futuristic setting, gameplay mechanics remained faithful to the traditions of the franchise. Throughout the gameplay you get to construct various residential and industrial buildings, which develop automatically or can be upgraded manually, if you prefer.

A spin-off of the popular economic strategy game series, created for mobile devices by Mi'pu'mi, founded by former Rockstar members, with the help of Blue Byte Software. The game is set in the colonial era, and your task is to establish and develop a prosperous colony in a newly-discovered region of the world. You start out on a tiny island with a small supply of materials, but as the game progresses, you unlock more resources and various other islands. At the same time, you have to manage trade, diplomacy, and safety of your colony. The mechanics are based on those from the PC and console installments in the series, although they were simplified and adapted for mobile devices and the freemium business model. The visuals of the production resemble those of the web-based Anno games and The Settlers.

Another installment in the popular series of economy strategy games developed cooperatively by Related Designs, the creators of the franchise, and the legendary Blue Byte studio under the watchful eye of Ubisoft. The fifth entry in the series, contrary to the previous ones, takes the players to the future, to the eponymous year of 2070, when climatic changes drastically raised water levels around the world, forcing humankind to move to higher ground. The gameplay mechanics use a number of characteristic solutions of the series but not without several novelties. A grand ship, called the Ark, is our base of operations that can be upgraded with each completed mission. There are three different factions to choose from, each possessing a different development tree. The first one offers advanced industry and aggressive expansion possibilities, the second focuses primarily on environmental protection, while the third one emphasizes modern technologies. The available game modes include a classical single player campaign, continuous mode as well as co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.

The fourth major installment in the popular series of economy simulators that began in 1998. It was developed by Related Designs, a subsidiary of Ubisoft. As the title says, the action takes place in the Middle Ages during the Age of Discovery, and the players assume the role of colonists who managed to reach the eastern coast of Asia. The gameplay mechanics do not deviate from the well-known standards of the series. Starting out with a modest colony established on a remote island, we have to develop it and transform subsequent cities into metropolises brimming with life. Anno 1404 offers a sophisticated economy model that involves creating complex production chains as well as effective trade and diplomacy. Among this myriad of lesser novelties, especially noteworthy one is the sandbox mode that allows us to play freely without any plot limitations.
