The Beginner's Guide

An original narrative-driver production developed by the independent studio Everything Unlimited. It is another creation of Davey Wreden, the designer of the popular The Stanley Parable. The game focuses on the story of a complicated relation with a friend known as Coda. He is also a video game developer, and we get to browse the rich library of 134 titles he created.

An exploration game created by Spaces of Play - an independent developer. The player is taken to an oneiric world and assumes the role of a nameless character who wears a blue jacket. The player explores a colorful fantasy world inhabited by various species of animals. Although certain ones can be mounted for example, other pose a threat to the protagonist.

An episodic adventure game with music game features, developed by Among Giants. Distortions tells the story of a woman who wakes up in a hospital bed in an unknown location after an accident. She notices that the time had stopped and all objects become alive only if she touches them. While traveling through the surrealistic realm with a giant, chained creature on the horizon, the protagonist is trying to discover how she got to this weird place and how to get back to the real world.

A unique detective game by Sam Barlow, the main designer and writer of Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Her Story is a rare example of a FMV adventure game — most of the visuals consists of videos of live-action actors. The plot of Her Story focuses on a British woman named Hannah, whose husband went missing in mysterious circumstances. Based on the recordings of her testimonies from 1994, you have to discover the truth behind those events.

An original role-playing game focusing on exploration. It was developed by Pixel Trickery Games and can be considered a spiritual heir to Sunless Sea created by Failbetter Games. The player assumes the role of a traveler, who is also a spy and a poet. He traverses a surrealistic train with many legs, which is a form of a parasitic dimension. The protagonist has to discover who would build it, and why.

Another game by Tomorrow Corporation, combining the mechanics of logic games with a rather serious topic (rarely occurs in the genre) and unique visuals. The player assumes the role of a corporate worker who begins their long way to the top, having taken up the lowest job position on the 1st floor. Each in-game level represents a year of work in the corporation, when the protagonist has to complete a certain task from their superior.

An original 2D logic platformer and an enhanced edition of the 2014’s Metrico for PS Vita. Metrico+ is a fruit of the developers’ fascination with all kinds of infographics, graphs, and statistical tables that became an integral part of our everyday life. The action takes place in a world composed entirely of the aforementioned elements. In the game, we observe various graphs resembling both real and fantasy landscapes.

A minimalistic logic game developed by the independent studio Polyculture, led by Joel McDonald. Gameplay comes down to trimming a tree branch and shaping it so that it can reach the sunniest spot. To make matters more difficult, you will come across a number of obstacles and dangers, so your priority is the plant’s safety, not its high growth rate. 2D visuals of Prune are kept in a neat, minimalistic style accompanied by calm, ambient music. The title features simple, intuitive controls.

Shape of the World does not offer a plot as such; rather, it focuses on delivering a certain visual experience. The player takes on the role of a nameless traveler who introduces different changes to the world around along his way. The changes made are divided into two kinds: the passive (as the player follows the designated path) and the active.

An experimental, three-dimensional platformer offering an abstract, alluring game world. Bound is the third project developed by Plastic - a Polish team popular for a dark adventure game Datura and an artistic logic game Linger in Shadows. Similar to these titles, Bound was created exclusively for PlayStation 4 and it was developed in cooperation with Sony Santa Monica (the God of War series).

A mobile action game which combines pinball and painting in an rather interesting way. This unorthodox idea was created in the London-based studio State of Play. Similarly as in case of a typical pinball, in Inks the player bounces a ball by using flippers placed at the bottom of the screen. However, instead of an impressive pinball table, in this game the screen shows only a simple background with lightly drawn contour.

Trauma is an independent game by Krystian Majewski, which escapes attempts to categorize the genre. It tells the story of a woman who found herself in hospital as a result of a car accident. The player observes the patient's dreams and, by interfering in their course, tries to improve her mental state. The game won two nominations in the prestigious Independent Games Festival Awards 2010 competition.
