A mobile action game which combines pinball and painting in an rather interesting way. This unorthodox idea was created in the London-based studio State of Play. Similarly as in case of a typical pinball, in Inks the player bounces a ball by using flippers placed at the bottom of the screen. However, instead of an impressive pinball table, in this game the screen shows only a simple background with lightly drawn contour.
Inks is an arcade game created for mobile devices with AND and iOS system. The game is a combination of pinball and... painting. This unusual project was developed by State of Play studio, which received a number of industry awards (including the prestigious BAFTA award) for the game Lumino City.
Mechanics
This game combines classical pinball mechanics with elements of contemporary abstract art in order to create a unique artistic impression. The whole game is about bouncing the ball with flippers placed at the bottom of the screen. Unlike typical pinball games, known from computer screens and arcade machines, the gameplay is not accompanied by glittering colourful tables with fantastic graphic motifs and classic ramps, bumpers, etc. The extremely simple boards have small rectangular blocks filled with paint, and every accurate hit causes them to splash. As the game progresses, the "table" is filled with colourful blobs, which gradually mix with each other and leave characteristic colourful streaks. The aim of the game is not only to achieve the best possible score, but also to create a unique "painting work", in which colourful spots and streaks create a specific record of the history of our game.
Technical aspects
Inks on AND and iOS devices combines graphic minimalism with artistry, characteristic of the State of Play studio. When you start playing, you can only see a gloomy grey background with an outline of the table and small, colourful blocks on the edges of the table. As the game progresses, however, the board gradually gets painted with a whole palette of colors, creating a multi-colored, abstract image.
