The Witcher 3 propelled CD Projekt RED into the major league of gamedev – the third game in the Warsaw-based studio's portfolio entered the canon of western RPGs for good, often considered one of the best games ever made. But CDPR now face quite a challenge – they have to prove they're larger than their most famous series, deliver a completely different and new adventure without their lucky charm, Geralt of Rivia.
Furthermore, CDPR certainly didn't chose the path of least resistance – cyberpunk, as such, is not very popular among developers of high-budget productions, and most of cyberpunk productions of recent years didn't fare very well on the market (Blade Runner 2049, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the American Ghost in the Shell). But CDPR are set to buck the trend.
The Reds have been very successful in creating hype around Cyberpunk – not only with compelling presentations, but, above all, by their masterful strategies, such as introducing Keanu Reeves when no one expected it. Another good prognostic is simply the fact that the game looks great – we can expect an interestingly designed, morally ambiguous world, along with challenging quests to equal the best stories of the Wild Hunt, as well as many elements that present a completely new challenge for the team: first-person perspective, shooting, or driving a car.
Basically, the only thing that seems to threaten the studio's new project at this stage are the ridiculously high expectations we all have. Many players are so wound up that even the slightest flaws seen on the trailers can cause near hysteria, and also defeatism. To paraphrase a dead meme – "Keep calm and wait for Cyberpunk 2077." Everything will be fine!
