Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok

IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Creator: Crystal Shard
  2. Genre: point & click adventure game

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is another long adventure game in our line-up. The game was inspired by the classic Quest for Glory series. This means that the gameplay is enhanced by RPG elements. In addition to the usual adventure game fare of exploring locations and solving puzzles, there is an elaborate combat system and character development mechanics based on several classes.

During gameplay, we play as a warrior who must stop the invasion of the ice monsters on the land of humans. The script seems quite funny, but it can strike dramatic tones effectively when needed. The game is elaborate and extensive, providing several hours of high-level entertainment. The authors dedicated four years of their lives to it and the enormity of their work can be seen at every turn.

Submachine Series

IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Creator: Mateusz Skutnik
  2. Genre: adventure game

Our next proposal is Submachine, a series of adventure games developed by Mateusz Skutnik. The series currently consists of ten games plus several small side titles. Each is in fact, a set of ingenious puzzles - solving them is immensely satisfying. Moreover, the creator is also involved in producing comics and knows well how to create a great atmosphere with simple graphics.

Initially, the player focuses only on puzzles, but as he moves on to the next games, he begins to discover more and more parts of the plot, which becomes more and more interesting at the same time, until finally, the pleasure of learning the story begins to at least match the satisfaction of solving puzzles.

The entire series is available for free in browser form. It is worth adding, however, that the author has also created paid versions in which the main difference are the improved graphics.

The Witch's House

IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Developer: Fummy
  2. Genre: adventure game

According to the name, the RPG Maker app was created to allow users to create role-playing games. However, Japanese fans specialized in using these tools to produce adventure horror games. Those games are in the heyday, but if we were to recommend just one, then The Witch's House seems the best choice.

In the game, we play a 13-year-old girl named Viola who has to get out of a haunted house. The mansion is full of deadly traps, and finding a way around them takes a lot of cunning. The puzzles turn out to be really difficult and even veterans of the genre will struggle.

The graphics are simple and cartoonish, yet The Witch's House can genuinely frighten. Plus, the plot has been brilliantly handled, and the ending has a power that makes you think about the game for long days after it's finished.

Quest for Glory II

IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Developer: Sierra (game) / AGD Interactive (remake)
  2. Genre: isometric adventure game with RPG elements

The Quest for Glory series stands out from other Sierra brands by enriching typical adventure game mechanisms with strong RPG elements, including combat system and character development. The first part received a VGA remaster, and the newest parts of the series standout with their graphics. The only title that needed a remake was Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire, which was handled by fans from AGD Interactive.

They refreshed the game as Sierra would have done if such a project had ever been created. So we received new graphics corresponding to the VGA standard and a point-n-click interface. The entire storyline was recreated, but at the same time, the combat system was greatly improved, modernized, and received improved artificial intelligence. In addition, navigation in the mazes was facilitated, which in the original led many players to pure despair.
