Spelunky
- Creator: Derek Yu
- Genre: roguelike platformer
Spelunky is another classic on our list. It is a two-dimensional platformer that allows you to assume the role of an Indiana Jones-like archaeologist, who embarks on a dangerous journey through randomly generated underworld full of not only gold but also traps and dangerous opponents. All of it to collect as many valuables as possible and uncover all sorts of secrets.
It sounds simple, but the quality of the game is at the highest level. Despite the randomness of the generated levels, they always provide plenty of fun and suitably challenging challenges. On top of that, Spelunky has an exquisite atmosphere that makes exploration fun.
A commercial remake with HD Graphics came out some time ago, but the free predecessor loses nothing when confronted with its successor. Visit spelunkyworld.com to find more.
Canabalt
- Creator: Adam Saltsman
- Genre: 2D endless runner
Our next choice, Canabalt, is one of the most important games of the last ten years. It launched a new genre called endless runner, which now encompasses many of the most popular productions in the mobile market.
In Canabalt, we control a suit-wearing man who tries to escape from a bleak dystopian city. The character automatically runs to the right side of the screen through an endless map, and we only control his jumps. So the gameplay is simple, but at the same time incredibly difficult. The protagonist quickly reaches ridiculous speeds, making navigating various obstacles and dangers a huge challenge.
Sooner or later, every player makes a mistake that ends the game, and yet you always feel like starting a run again and trying to break your previous record. Despite the passing of years and great competition, Canabalt remains one of the greatest endless runners in history. This is due to the quality of the production, the great atmosphere and music, and the lack of microtransactions that hurt this genre.
Treasure Adventure Game
- Developer: Robit Studios
- Genre: 2D metroidvania platformer
For the lovers of two-dimensional platformers, we recommend Treasure Adventure Game. In the game, we play as a small pirate, with a mandatory hook instead of a hand and a parrot on our shoulder. Production falls into the category known as metroidvania, so instead of linear levels we have an open-ended world that is dynamic - day changes into night, independent characters go from place to place, etc. We travel across the islands on foot and between them by boat, which we can modify and improve.
Basic mechanisms are typically platformer-like and include avoiding obstacles, collecting items, and eliminating enemies. In addition to the arcade challenges, there is also no shortage of ingenious logic puzzles. And all of this is presented in sympathetic retro-style graphics.
Lost Vikings
- Developer: Silicon & Synapse (current Blizzard Entertainment)
- Genre: 3D platformer with logic game elements
Blizzard Entertainment is a powerhouse in the industry thanks to brands such as Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, and now Overwatch has joined that trinity. Before this developer became a giant, however, it produced less popular but equally interesting games, in most cases still under the name Silicon & Synapse. The best of these was 1992's Lost Vikings, which was made available for free on the Battle.net website 22 years later.
The game is a platformer that tells the story of three Vikings. It is distinguished from typical works of this genre by its elaborate logic game elements. Puzzles take advantage of the fact that each character has different abilities and these must be cleverly used to bypass obstacles and eliminate threats. Many productions copied the idea, but none succeeded in making it as successful. Even today, 24 years after its premiere, Lost Vikings still manages to charm and provide fun for long hours.
