Battle for Wesnoth

Let's begin with Battle for Wesnoth. It is a turn-based fantasy strategy, inspired by 16-bit console classics such as Master of Monsters and Warsong. The game focuses on the warfare aspect and is played in turns, on maps covered in a hex grid. When playing, we need to use land formations to our advantage and select units that work well against certain opponents. You also need to capture villages, as it provides the player with gold that can be spent on new units.

For a turn-based fantasy game, the game has fairly simple rules, which, however, hide a lot of depth. Plus, with six available factions, it offers a lot of variety. The standard version contains sixteen campaigns, but fans have developed a number of new ones, making Battle for Wesnoth last a very long time. Moreover, the game offers a lot of language versions.

Open Panzer is a free turn-based war strategy game that recreates all the content of the iconic Panzer General II, adding interface improvements and support for higher resolutions. Like the original, this production serves up the skirmishes on an operational scale taking place during World War II.

The mechanics are slightly simplified. The game does not offer full historical realism, but the rules governing the gameplay are easy to master while offering plenty of depth. Most of all, Open Panzer is exceptionally engaging. Similarly to the original, it is one of the most addictive turn-based games in history. Large amounts of content also proves to be a big advantage. The older players should certainly remember a turn-based strategy called Steel Panthers. Steel Panthers MBT is a fan-developed, content-driven version of Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles. The game contains impressive amounts of modern equipment, with an emphasis on tanks. You can also expect a huge amount of tactical challenges on the hex-governed maps.

The greatest advantage of this production is its complexity. Graphics are not the most important feature here - when playing the game, you can feel like a staff officer who has to take into account numerous factors that influence the events on the battlefield.

The game is completely free, although there is also a premium edition that has a few extra features, such as support for higher resolutions. And if the MBT version is not enough, there is also Steel Panthers WW2, created by the same team and offered in the same way. The main difference in this case is the historical setting.
