Darkness and the fear level - introduction
In Amnesia Rebirth, the main character visits many locations with poor lighting or completely dark. Entering very dark locations turns on a different mode similar to seeing in the dark. However, ultimately, you should find and use the matches or oil lamp described in the following subsections.
In the default Original Mode, the darkness is not only a hindrance in exploration. It is also a potential threat to the heroine's mental health . This is because prolonged exposure to dark places gradually increases Tasi's fear level. As a result, various filters will be displayed on the screen, and the main character will experience hallucinations, which are a warning of losing her mind and dying. You don't have to worry about the darkness if you play in Adventure Mode, which removes the horror elements from the game. They include signs that you are losing your mind when staying in the dark.
Matches
The most common way to deal with the darkness is to find matches, which function as collectibles because each matchbox is in a specific place in the game. We have included the locations where you can get matches in our walkthrough.
Unfortunately, each lit match gives light for a very limited time. It can also be extinguished faster if you run or the wind appears. Tasi can carry a maximum of 10 matches at a time, so it is advisable to use them regularly so that you always have free space to pick up more.
An additional significant feature of matches is that they can be used on environmental elements to create more stable light sources. It is mainly about various "stationary" torches and braziers, which you can light with matches. This is especially useful if you want to explore a given room more thoroughly. You will not have to rush that much then.
It should be added here that some light sources can be extinguished by gusts of wind or drafts too. This especially applies to The Fortress chapter. It is not worth wasting more matches in such situations unless you still have a large part of the room to explore.
Lantern
The lantern can illuminate the area more effectively than the matches, but it is not available from the very beginning of the game. You find it while completing The Deeper Caves chapter . It is next to the corpse in the caves, and the place where you can obtain this item is described in more detail in our walkthrough.
After you obtain the lantern, you can take it out from the inventory by pressing the appropriate button. However, do not overdo using it because it consumes oil quickly. As a result, you have to find oil containers in the game world, which appear in three variants - small, medium, and large. It is best to refill the lamp after the oil is exhausted or the oil level is low, not to waste the rest of the container's content.
We recommend that you use the lantern in larger, dark corridors with no torches or other objects to light up. In most important rooms, you will find such objects, and it is better to use a match to light them to save the oil.
