Walkthrough | Mountain in The Witness The Witness Guide
Last update: 06 March 2019
This chapter contains our walkthrough to the Mountain, one of the locations in The Witness. Almost all of the lasers lead here. The Mountain is similar to The Town in that this place has puzzles found in other locations. Some of them are really easy while others are extremely hard. This location also has puzzles involving bright colors that change constantly.
After you have activated, at least, seven lasers, climb to the top. While climbing, you run into a cave entrance.
Inside, there is a door with puzzle. At the other side, there is a film access code.
While on the top, activate the panel.
Behind you, there are two statues. One of them is holding a box. Its switch becomes fully visible after you have activated, at least, seven lasers. Activate it.
Your next task is to activate three locks of the entrance. To do this, you need to take appropriate position and solve the puzzle in all three possible ways. Wile taking the position, note the statues. Their legs are obstructing the beam.
To solve each of the puzzles, you need to stand near one of the three blockades. Sometimes, you will have to stand right in front of it and sometimes next to it. Note the legs of the statues. If they obstruct the path, move a bit and try again. Do not stand too far away from the blockade. After you have unlocked all three blockades, climb down the stairs.
You will reach a new room. Climb up the stairs on the left and approach the panel.
There are several possible solutions here. Thanks to them, you can access the doors that you can see on both sides of the room, puzzles on the left and on the right walls and the central column. In all of these spots, you will have to solve new puzzles. The path that you lead will never be a straight one and you will often have to change it. Take down all of the possible combinations, because you will come back to some of them.
Your task is to solve both puzzle sets on the walls, two puzzles from the pile of junk, and puzzles in the room on the left. If you have solved all of them, the door will open and you can progress another section of the mountain. You can solve the puzzles in any way you want. Also, it does not matter where you lead the first path, as long as it is a correct one.
In the pile of junk, you find two puzzles. The first one is opposite the door. With properly lead path, you will be able to take a closer look at it. If, however, you want to, you can solve it from a distance.
You find another puzzle to the right of the pile. Also, you can solve this one without approaching.
On the left, you note a set of puzzles. They are not difficult, but - with the exception of the first one - none of them is fully functional. The view on the second panel will be slightly tilted up and to the right. In spite of that, the starting point is in the bottom-left corner. Simply, start solving the puzzle in the same spot, in which you started the first one. This should work. The view on the next panels will be either obstructed, or in constant movement. On the last one, it will rotate to mach your movements. Nevertheless, the puzzles are simple, but they will require you to pay attention to what is going on the screen. You need to be especially careful in the case of the last panel, because too rapid movements of the pointer will cause quick rotation of the screen.
Just like the set on the left, the one on the right is simple but broken. Some of the screens will haunt you with black spots or stripes. One of them will be so radiant, in regular intervals, so that you will not be able to see anything on them. The easiest one in the set, is the last one. It is darker than the previous ones, but otherwise it is fully functional.
In the room on the left, there is another set of simple puzzles. The only difficulty here is perspective. The view of each panel is obstructed, in a way, so you need to stand in front of it, in such a way so as to see the full screen. Also, pay attention to the starting point. The beam you start gets stuck on obstacles, and the other one present on the panel does not. Therefore, if you cannot solve the puzzle because of the blockade, try again, but this time pick a different starting point.
After the door opens, you will be climbing more stairs. You will reach another glass room. On your right, you mote colorful panels. The entire difficulty here is that the colors change. Note how the colors change. Try not to look at the screens for too long. Even if you don't normally suffer from such things, these may cause discomfort.
The puzzles unlock the stairs up, and another panel. The second panel is at the other side of the room. Both of them have been connected to the same puzzle. Your task is to lead the beams in such a way so as to move between platforms and open the door on the left. Beams should not intersect and they should both be guided in the way that solves the puzzle. Note the wires that lead to the door, and occasions on which they light up. Basing on this, work out the solution. There is quite a lot of walking around between platforms, but the puzzle itself should not be too difficult for you. Remember to take down solutions, because both panels have several of them and there is only one that opens the door.
The set on the other side of the room is synchronous. This means that you will first be solving one puzzle, then two, then three at the same time and so on. Think of it as of a puzzle where new elements are added each time you solve it. While solving puzzles, try to keep an eye on all the panels at the same time. Otherwise, you will not be able to work out the correct solution. To make things easier, note the puzzle down and complete it each time after you have unlocked new panels. This will be much more convenient than having to look at all panels at the same time.
After you solve both sets and do your share of running 'round between platforms, you unlock the door. Inside, there is an elevator. Take it and go down.
During the ride, to the left of the control panel, you will notice an arrow puzzle.
After you get down, you will have to solve four more puzzles. This time, there are no additional conditions or handicaps here. Solve them.
Thanks to this, the floor will turn into a giant puzzle. Use all four panels that you have been solving, as landmarks. Both beams must come close to them. This way, you will open another door.
Walk around the statue and stand on the panel behind it. You will now have to solve a time puzzle. Every dozen-or-so seconds, both of the panels will be covered. If you have managed to solve the puzzle in time, the panel remains the same. If not, it will be replaced with another one. There are many panels, and little time, so there is no way in solving all of them. This is why you should start with the panel on the left. The puzzle will be more difficult. After you work out the solution, the puzzle on the right will seem a piece of cake.
And now, for the last set of puzzles. On eight columns, there is the majority of puzzles that you can find in the game. The only difference, and major handicap, is the shape. To make things easier, walk around each column and draw the puzzle on a piece of paper. Also, try to move the pointer slowly, while solving the puzzles. These are quite simple but abrupt moves cause camera to spin around the column quickly. As a result, it will be difficult to solve the puzzles. Apart from that, they should not be too difficult.
After you solve all eight. An elevator appears in the water. Close it using the switches above the entrance. Then, turn around and activate the last two pairs of switches. Congratulations, you have just finished the game.
