This chapter focuses on the Quarry, one of the locations in The Witness. Here, you will find general information about the puzzles and the locations of various objects. Check Puzzle solutions to get solutions for the puzzles found in this area.
The Quarry neighbors the Orchard and the Sun temple. You start on white rocks sparsely overgrown with leafless trees.
In front of the quarry entrance, there are two puzzles. The first one requires you to separate black and white fields.
You should remember the second puzzle from the Marsh. While solving it, remember that you can "move" the elements.
After you enter the quarry, go to the building on the left. Walk around the door there and approach the main door. There, you will have to solve two simple puzzles. Separate white fields from the black ones and then lead a path crossing all of the dark spots.
In the building, approach the panel on the left. Here, you learn about a new type of puzzle. In theory, this puzzle is unsolvable, because in both cases, one of the spots will remain uncrossed. This is what the white symbol on the panel is for. Using it, you can remove extra elements of the puzzle. If you lead the line along the upper path, the symbol removes the lower spot. In you take the bottom path, the upper spot will disappear. The symbol removes those of the elements of the puzzles that it is joined with. What is important here is not the distance, but the fact of being grouped together. The symbol and the spot reappear during the next attempt at the puzzle.
Lead the line along the upper path. This way, you raise a platform over which you can get to exercise puzzles. Before that, you can open the door on the left.
Climb up. There, you find six training puzzles. The rules are identical with the ones of the panel that you have just been tampering with. On one of the panels, there is no symbol. As for the rest of them, you need to remove the symbol by skipping one of the spots.
On the left, there is another panel which can raise the platform. It is connected with the previous one. If one of the platforms is raised, the other will be lowered automatically. Raise the second platform and walk onto it, while it is rising. Go to the room on the right.
The next set of puzzles is very similar to the one that you had to solve in greenhouse. The only difference is the white symbol that you can use to remove single elements. Separate colors using the beam. Colors do not need to form a group. All you need to do is separate them from each other. Thanks to the symbol, you can remove one extra color from each of the panels.
Go back. Next to the platform-controlling panels, you can see one more puzzle. Separate colors and, at the same time, lead the line across the marked fields. Lead the line so that the white symbol removes one of the four fields.
In the building, there are two puzzles left. You find the first one to the left of the previous one. The symbol here is blue, but it works in the very same way as in the previous puzzles. Solving this puzzle opens up the way to the elevator outside.
To find the last puzzle in the building, return to the series of puzzles on the metal platform. On the right, on the wall, there is one more. After you solve it, stairs to the ground level are lowered.
Climb down the stairs and follow to the end. On the right, you notice a door. Open it and climb up the stairs.
On the rooftop, there is another arrow puzzle. Turn around and go to the elevator.
Solving the puzzle activates the elevator. Depending on your solution, the elevator either moves up or down. It is very slow, but it will take you to the entrance of the building. If you do not want to wait, take the stairs.
Go to the other building now. Right after you enter, go right and climb down. One the wall, you notice two puzzles. You should remember the one on the right from the Marsh. It is difficult, but there are no additional rules to it. As for the one on the left, you should have already seen it in the previous location - Treehouses. In comparison with the rest of the puzzles, this one turns out to be very easy.
When both puzzles are solved, you activate the platform. Depending on your solution, you either raise or lower it. Raise the platform, so you can get to the upper floor.
The next set of puzzles is a combination of puzzles from Marsh and those from the previous building. They may take some time. Not only will you have to move the symbols, but also you need to keep in mind that one of them needs to be removed. Fortunately, no puzzle here requires rotating symbols.
After you solve the puzzle, approach the next panel. It controls the platform that you have raised earlier. The platform moves, depending on which symbol of the panel you remove. Your task here is to move the platform as far right as possible. Jump onto the platform while it is moving, so you can reach the unavailable part of the floor.
While climbing up, note the panel on the left. Thanks to it, you can summon the boat (if you had managed to unlock it earlier.)
Before you start the next puzzle, use the panel to raise the blockade.
The next set of puzzles is going to require you to pair up colorful symbols. This is in no way different from the first puzzle in this building. Some of the panels have one, or two-colour symbols, but this shouldn't be a problem to you. Issues occur later, when apart from the colorful symbols, those from Marsh are included. Fortunately, all of the puzzles are easy and you don't need to rotate them.
After you solve the first set of puzzles, go to the three last ones. Unlike the previous ones, these will have more symbols from Marsh, and are altogether bigger, which makes it more difficult to solve them.
On the left, there is one more puzzle, which is the last one in this building.
After you solve all of the puzzles, return to the first building. Climb onto the rooftop and get to the laser. You enable it by solving a simple puzzle.
