Downhill Map from Spintires MudRunner and how to drive through it.
Last update: 11 December 2017
This is the first map that can be a real challenge. All of the previous maps where flat and had only small hills. Downhill is their opposite - you will have to drive on steep hills and uphill roads. The map has two lumber mills - one is near the left end of the map and the second is in the south-east corner. Transporting timber to the second lumber mill can cause you a lot of problems. The map has a blockade that you can't avoid or go around. This forces you to use difficult and uphill roads on the west part of the hill.
There is an additional garage located in the north but it won't be that useful to you. Number of vehicles that you can choose from is limited, the same goes for your starting line-up. You can choose up to two vehicles with a combined value of 5 stars.
I recommend to collect three trucks before you start transporting timber: two of them are for transporting timber and the third one will have a fuel cistern. Driving one truck with two trailers is possible but driving with a convoy like that on muddy and steep roads will be very difficult. However, an additional truck will always make travels easier. A cistern allows you to refuel your vehicles - you won't have to drive to garages because of a distance and environment. B-66 is a good choice for a cistern because the game often puts them on maps, they are easy to drive and can carry both fuel and repair points at the same time. The terrain here is demanding and you have travel long distances. This is reflected by fuel consumption. Going back to fuel stations may not be very effective.
Load timber in the north-east corner of the map to transport it easier. You can use the orange path. You can drive on a wide and flat but muddy road (dark orange path) or choose a narrow road with more tiled ground and many turns (bright orange path). If you want to use the second option then drive to the second garage and start going downhill. Thanks to this road you can reach timber rather fast. From this log station onward, you don't have to go back a few times nor follow difficult paths.
The path from this log station is easy. Follow the small road near the left end of the map, the one marked in red. You won't drive fast because can get slowed down by numerous branches and fallen trees. However, the ground here is tiled which makes it safer when compared to the wide but muddy road (bright orange and red path).
Next, you have to drive for a little bit. However, the path is challenging. You have to reach the log station next to the river. Follow the blue path and try to avoid the muddy road with a lot of water. The river needs to be crossed twice. Its current in both places is very strong which will force you to disband your convoy. Drive one vehicle and use winch. It is easy to lose control over your vehicle or even get stuck in a water like that. You can often unlock a vehicle (usually K-700) in this area. It can be useful if you have problems with crossing the river.
Load timber, remember to refuel your vehicle and drive on the green road. You have to follow a path with multiple turns (located in the bottom of the map). Driving through the middle part of the map isn't recommended because it is steep, full of turns and has a lot of stones. Also, you won't find many places where you can hook your winch (red X). Once you reach the top of the hill, you have to drive on the wide road that is mostly made out of mud. This road allows you to avoid two blockades. This path is rather accessible and pleasant once you reach the top of the hill. From here, you won't come across any problems.
