Fights in South Park: The Fractured but Whole are turn-based. Some fights are mandatory, others are optional. The additional ones allow you to get a little bit of extra money, experience and, sometimes, additional items such as artifacts. Also, many of the fights are connected to the Titles.

In the bottom right corner of the screen you can see pictures of characters - they are placed in an order in which these characters will perform their turns. During your turn you can move freely within a blue area. You can end a turn manually by holding the skip button or by performing an attack. The first move goes to a character that started a fight. Defeat means death. If you want to start a more challenging fight then you should save your game first.

Each turn fills the ultimate attack bar which is displayed in the upper part of the screen. This attack deals a tremendous amount of damage to enemies but filling it completely isn't that easy. During a battle you can press action buttons (X/A) in a right moment to:

  • increase damage of your attack (press the button right before an attack),
  • increase growth of your ultimate attack bar during enemy's attack (press the button quickly when its icon is displayed on the screen which happens after enemy's attack).
Throwing a Fart on your enemies before a fight means that they will start it with Grossed Out status. - Combat basics - Gameplay Basics - South Park: The Fractured But Whole Game Guide
Throwing a Fart on your enemies before a fight means that they will start it with Grossed Out status.

You can inflict statuses during fights but you can also receive them yourself. If you want to learn more about them use the Inspection Mode during a fight and select a character. Negative effects can be removed with items (you must find or craft them first) that have healing properties such as Antidote. Each status lasts a specific amount of time and deals damage which usually happens at the end of a turn. Characters can have more than one active status. If you have a chance to start a fight then you should first throw "fart" on an enemy (L2+tiranlge/LT+Y) - enemies start with Grossed Out status which makes them lose health gradually right from a start of a fight (remember to hit that enemy with a fist after you threw fart to initiate a fight and to be able to move first). The rule is simple: if there are fireworks near your enemies, light them up - otherwise, you should throw fart on them before you initiate a fight.
