Red Dead Online: World map Red Dead Online Guide and Tips

Our Red Dead Online game guide offers a very detailed world map – you’ll find out about important locations, collectibles, hunting spots, map treasures, free roam quest givers, places to buy guns & horses and other unique things to find and explore.

Last update: 28 June 2022

Red Dead Online is an open-world game with many locations to explore and a lot of different loot & secrets to find. Our game guide should help you out in finding different unique things and places you want to visit. We've prepared a world map showing all of the important and unique locations. You can find out about bandit hideouts, legendary animals lairs, treasure map spots, fishing spots, areas with different types of plants, quest givers locations, roles starting spots, fast travel points, campfires, stables, gunsmith stores and other things. All of this should come in handy while playing the game and trying to locates specific areas on the world map.

Key information about the world map

The world map in Red Dead Online is technically bigger than the one in Red Dead Redemption 2 (singleplayer story), because it allows to explore the south-western corner - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

The world map in Red Dead Online is technically bigger than the one in Red Dead Redemption 2 (singleplayer story), because it allows to explore the south-western corner. This is the part of the world which was originally featured in Red Dead Redemption 1. There was a secret way of getting there while playing the singleplayer campaign, but there weren't any missions or activities taking place in that region.

Starting a new game in Red Dead Online forces you to complete a tutorial which is an introduction to some of the basic mechanics of the game, but after that you can explore the world without any restrictions. This means you can go to all of the places shown in our game guide. The only inconvenience is having to take a long trip to more distant locations. RDO offers fast travel, but it's pricy (we've covered it in more detail further down the page).

Some activities from our map may be initially locked and they may have additional requirements. For example, you can't go fishing until you've leveled to rank 14 and bought a fishing rod, and you can only use the bounty boards after you've received a bounty hunter license.

Some of the markers on our map show a whole area instead of 1 specific location. There are two explanations for that. The first reason is that some things can be found very close to each other and you should search the whole area for them. The second reason is that some unique locations appear in random places.

Our world map focuses on Red Dead Online, but some of the things from the map (like the stores) can also be found in the singleplayer mode.

We've covered more important topics (like starting different roles or finding mission givers) on separate pages of our guide.

Fast travel in RDO

Reaching distant places can be time-consuming in Red Dead Online, because by default you have to travel there by horse or by train (when possible) - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

Reaching distant places can be time-consuming in Red Dead Online, because by default you have to travel there by horse or by train (when possible). There is a workaround which involves using fast travel to "teleport" to other areas on the map. You can initiate it by visiting one of the fast travel points on the map - they have the road sign icon and they can usually be found next to towns & villages.

Sadly fast travel isn't free and it can actually get quite expensive. The more distant location you wish to travel to, the more money you have to pay and in some cases the trip can cost you even more than 10 dollars.

We recommend using fast travel only when you need to go somewhere far and you're in a hurry. In other cases it's actually better to complete the trip using a horse, because you'll have opportunities to hunt, collect plants and perform other useful activities along the way.

Mission types

There are different types of missions showing up on the world map - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

There are different types of missions showing up on the world map. The most interesting ones are the story missions - they have unique objectives and cut-scenes. Some story missions can be done solo, while others require a group of players (other participants can be found thanks to matchmaking or you can play as a part of a posse). Completing the story missions is usually well-rewarded - you can receive a lot of XP, dollars & gold bars and other unique items.

Some story missions require certain honor (morality bar) before they can be started - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

Some story missions require certain honor (morality bar) before they can be started. You can change your honor by performing good/evil deeds or by finding Old Man Jones on the map and paying him for the change (to honorable or dishonorable). Our RDO map shows 3 possible places where Old Man Jones can be found.

The other main type are Free Roam missions received from strangers - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

The other main type are Free Roam missions received from strangers. We've marked their locations on our world map. Some of them appear as question marks and you need to meet them first to learn their name and to change the icon.

Free Roam missions offers various objectives, like delivering packages or eliminating enemies from certain locations. A lot of them have a time limit and you also have to remember that you may be interrupted by other players while trying to complete them. Every finished Free Roam mission is rewarded with XP & currency and you may also receive some other unique loot. All missions in the game can be a good way to level up and to gain money & supplies.

Series & free roam events

The map in our game guide doesnt cover series and free roam events, because you dont actually need to study the in-game map to participate in them - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

The map in our game guide doesn't cover series and free roam events, because you don't actually need to study the in-game map to participate in them. Various series (competitions agains other players) have their own icons on the map. You can go there to start a series of your choosing, but visiting them isn't mandatory. You can also participate in series by entering the Player menu and choosing Quick Join.

Free Roam events don't appear on the map and instead you can receive invitations in random moments while travelling the world. Pressing the designated button will show the full invite. Bear in mind that joining a Free Roam event may cancel your current activity and you can also lose animal skins transported on the back of your horse.

Stores and services

Red Dead Online offers the same types of stores and services, as the singleplayer campaign of Red Dead Redemption 2 - Red Dead Online: World map - World Atlas - Red Dead Online Guide

Red Dead Online offers the same types of stores and services, as the singleplayer campaign of Red Dead Redemption 2. You can visit general stores and the ones specializing in offering specific goods like weapons or clothing. It's also possible to visit places such as a barber, a saloon, a stable or a photo studio. We've marked the key buildings and merchants on our world map and you can use it to reach a specific business you want to visit.

It's worth mentioning that it's possible to use the catalogue as an alternative to going to the stores. The catalogue can be opened from any place in the world by holding a designated button. You can order new weapons, clothing and various supplies. The downside of relying on the catalogue is that you need to pick up some things in person by going to any of the post offices and collecting the delivery. It's possible to use this method to store ammo or other supplies for later use.
