Roles are one of the more advanced activities in Red Dead Online and you can treat them as special jobs (professions). They unlock new things to do in the game and new types of rewards. Our game guide offers a world map with the starting locations for available roles, as well as detailed information on them. You'll learn how to become a trader, a moonshiner, a collector, a bounty hunter or a naturalist.
Naturalist role
You can learn about the Naturalist profession by finding the On the Nature of Beasts yellow marker on the world map. You need to visit the Strawberry Welcome Center in the town of Strawberry.
Entering the building will trigger a cut-scene with Harriet Davenport and Gus MacMillan.
The only way to become a Naturalist is to purchase a Sample Kit for 25 Gold Bars (one of the currencies in the game). You can do this straight away or (if you don't have the gold bars) you can find Harriet's tent on the map.
You'll be given an Animal Field Guide along with the Sample Kit. This will allow you to participate in various hunting challenges and to hunt for Legendary Animals - we've shown the locations of their hideouts on our map. Each legendary animal can spawn in a certain area of the map and only if the weather requirements have been met (like a certain part of the day or dry/rainy conditions).
It's worth noting that the Naturalist role offers a choice between sedating the animals using special ammunition (Harriet will like that) or killing them (Gus will like that). You can also purchase various supplies and unique items from both of these characters. Some of the purchases will require tokens gained by leveling up as the Naturalist. Gus can also buy animal skins and trophies from you and you can go to him with the skins instead of the butcher. We've marked Gus's and Harriet's possible locations on our world map.
Bounty Hunter role
You can learn about the Bounty Hunter profession by finding A License for Bounty Hunting yellow marker on the world map. You need to visit the Sherrif's Office in the town of Rhodes.
Approaching the sherrif's building will trigger a cut-scene with him and one of the bounty hunters.
The only way to become a Bounty Hunter is to purchase a Bounty Hunter License. You can do that by approaching any of the bounty boards found in the game world - we've marked their locations on our world map and they can usually be found in towns and next to some of the train stations.
The basic license costs 15 Gold Bars (one of the currencies in the game) and there's also a prestigious version costing 30 Gold Bars.
Having the license will allow you to pick up bounties and they work the same way as in the singleplayer mode. You can find out about criminals from wanted posters on the bounty boards. The next steps are finding them and bringing them back dead or alive (use the lasso - it's more risky, but the reward is better). Later on you'll also have a chance to pick up Legendary Bounties - they're elite targets harder to catch/kill, but the rewards are higher (100 or more dollars for each legendary bounty).
Collector role
You can learn about the Collector profession by finding the To Become a Collector yellow marker on the world map. You need to visit Madam Nazar's Caravan. It should appear to the west of Blackwater, but later in the game Madam Nazar's circus wagon will appear randomly in various places on the map. We've marked the possible spawn locations on our world map and checking them out may result in finding Madam Nazar again.
Approaching the caravan will trigger a cut-scene with Madam Nazar.
The only way to become a Collector is to purchase a Collector's Bag for 15 Gold Bars (one of the currencies in the game). This can be done after finding Madam Nazar's wagon again. Madam Nazar will also offer items useful in working as a collector, such as a shovel or a metal detector.
The goal of being a Collector is to dig out treasures with the help of maps purchased from Madam Nazar. After you've reached the treasure spot you'll have to find its exact location and a shovel will also come in handy.
You'll obtain various valuables and you can sell them to Madam Nazar. This can be done either straight away or only after finishing a collection - the second method will allow you to achieve a much better selling price. A complete set can be easily worth a few hundred dollars.
Trader role
There are two steps leading to learning about the Trader profession. The first step involves obtaining a letter from Cripps. You can do that by opening the lockbox in your camp. Once you have the letter open your satchel and read it.
The second step involves finding The Birth of a Company yellow marker on the world map. You need to visit the town of Armadillo and head inside one of the stores to meet with Cripps and learn the details of the Trader role.
The only way to become a Trader is to return to your camp, interact with Wilderness Outfitters and purchase a Butcher's Table for 15 Gold Bars (one of the currencies in the game).
Having the table in your camp will allow you to discover everything what this profession has to offer. You'll need materials (they can be obtained from hunting) and supplies (they can be bought or obtained from certain missions). They will allow you to craft items and then sell them for a higher price. You'll also have to think about owning good wagons and setting up your camp where your business can prosper easier.
Moonshiner role
This role is unlike the other ones, because it can't be unlocked right away simply by spending Gold Bars. You need to fulfill an additional requirement and that is reaching rank 5 in the Trader role and finishing a sell mission.
Completing the requirements will allow you to find A Life of Shine' yellow marker on the world map. You need to visit the Emerald Ranch to meet with Maggie Fike and learn about the profession.
The only way to become a Moonshiner is to purchase a Moonshine Shack for 25 gold bars (one of the currencies in the game). The shack can be constructed in the Bayou Nwa, Grizzlies, Hennigan's Stead, Heartlands or Tall Trees. You'll also have to complete a story mission involving rescuing a cook - Marcel. All of this will allow you to start your own moonshine business. You can visit Maggie's store, complete story & Bootlegger missions and even buy a bar.
