Major powers
During completing the campaign Heller learns five major powers. They can be described as melee weapons produced by the virus, which infected Heller. These are:
- Claws - You get it automatically after defeating one of brawlers during completing fourth main mission (Operation Flytrap).
- Tendrils - You get it automatically after defeating hydra during completing sixth main mission (Project Long Shadow).
- Blades - You get it automatically after defeating commander Gallagher during completing sixteenth main mission (The White Light).
- Hammerfist - You get it automatically after defeating juggernauts during completing seventeenth main mission (A Nest of Vipers).
- Whipfist - You get it automatically after defeating evolved opponent during completing twenty-fifth main mission (Last Resort).
Suggestions regarding the usefulness of particular major power can be found in the walkthrough. You should remember that you can change them at any time by holding LB button (screen above). I recommend doing so before each difficult battle, especially the after opening the power window, the game pauses.
Mutations
There are 33 mutations in total, which can be unlocked. In most cases they act as passive bonuses or somehow upgrade main Heller's powers. Mutations are divided into 5 main categories:
- Offensive - Primarily you should be interested in mutations which increase your damage (Revenge Boost for example) or increase the effectiveness of special attacks (Devastatingly Beautiful for the Devastator attack for example).
- Defensive - My favorite is Hard Boiled, which significantly decreases damage inflicted by enemies. Besides you should unlock Healthy Appetite as fast as possible, since it gives you more energy.
- Locomotion - In the first phase of the game you should unlock Jumpy and Dashing, since they improve Heller's acrobatic abilities. Extra Dashing is also valuable, because you'll get an additional dash.
- Predator - The most useful are mutations which guarantee you bonuses to energy bar (Protein Boost) and bio-mass bar (Hungry Boy). In later case you should also invest into Masterful Strikes mutation.
- Power Specialist - There are only 5 mutations in this category and each of them is associated with different major power. So select these which are associated with your favorite powers.
Mutation points can be obtained in two main ways. The first method is to complete Blacknet side mission, but in order to get the point you have to get 100% from the mission. Another method is to find secrets. In this case points are awarded whenever you found all secrets from the category (for example all blackboxes in Time Square area in the red zone). Information about the type of categories that you can develop is always displayed in the upper right corner (screen above).
Developing Heller
During the game you gather experience points. Each time you obtain a sufficient number of them you'll advance to the higher level and receive one development points. These points can be spent in six different categories:
- Movement - This category focuses on increasing speed, long jumps and the effectiveness and frequency of dashes. You should spend one point on that at the beginning and three points soon after.
- Health - This category focuses on the length of Heller's energy bar. If you play on Easy or Normal difficulty, you can ignore it or postpone it. Otherwise you should invest in this category, so you won't die often.
- Regeneration - This category focuses on automatic regeneration of your energy bar and gaining more health points after consuming enemies. In this case I recommend spending 1-2 points early enough, even if you do not play on high difficulty level.
- Shapeshifting - This category increases you effectiveness in disguise and you can omit it. As long as you keep proper precautions, hiding will not cause any problems.
- Mass - This category focuses on processes of gathering and spending bio-mass. In the latter case I mean of course special attacks. I suggest spending at least one point on this, so you'll have no problems performing special actions.
- Finishers - This category focuses on possibilities of easily destroying helicopters, tanks and APCs. You can invest in this category when you prefer to press one button to "glue" to the vehicle, instead of attacking machines in other ways.
Other powers
Heller develops all other powers mainly by defeating and consuming those opponents who have hand icon over their heads (screen above). After each successful action, the game grants you a random power and since there are dozens of them to be unlocked, I recommend using every opportunity to consume "special" enemies. I also recommend looking for enemies with icons of DNA chain (bonus experience points) and head (the possibility of obtaining memories of a murdered person).
