SMITE 2, the sequel to the popular MOBA, was released in Early Access in August last year. Until now, it was a paid game—we purchased access to the closed alpha for a fee ($29.99 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5). However, from the beginning, it was known that this was only a transitional stage, intended to limit the number of players in the initial stages of development. We finally found out when the title switches to a free-to-play model.

  1. We won't have to wait long, as SMITE 2 will become a free-to-play game with microtransactions on January 14th of this year, which is next Tuesday. Simultaneously, the game will move from the alpha phase to the beta stage.
  2. On that day, the game will be available for free download for both PC users and owners of Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5.

On January 14th, Aladdin will be introduced as a new hero in SMITE 2, bringing the total number of characters available to 45. Then two new game modes (Joust & Duel) will also be released, and testing of the alpha version of the third one (Assault) will begin.

The paid alpha of SMITE 2 has garnered mixed feedback on Steam, with only 60% of player reviews being positive. However, counting only reviews from the last 30 days, 70% of people gave the game a positive review, so it's clear that users like the direction of the project's development. We are curious whether this trend will be maintained after the game switches to the free-to-play model.
