Josh Sawyer Would Rather Create New Brand Than Pillars of Eternity 3. „We'll See Where The Future Takes Me”

The director of Fallout: New Vegas doesn't rule out a return to Pillars of Eternity, but would be more willing to make something entirely new.

Director of Fallout: New Vegas is more interested in new brands than returning to Pillars of Eternity. Josh Sawyer, who also worked on both PoE installments, spoke about his future plans and support for the Avowed developers in an interview with RPG Site.

This is not the first time that the developer has commented on the possibility of creating a third installment of PoE at the Obsidian Entertainment studio. A year ago he hinted that he would need a budget on the scale of Baldur's Gate 3 to convince someone to take on such a task. However, in August, Sawyer admitted that he would probably not be able to replicate the success of Larian Studios.

In a recent interview with RPG Site, Sawyer added that he is not sure if he would ever want to develop Pillars of Eternity 3. In his opinion, Avowed is a kind of continuation of the Eora universe, and he himself hasn't thought about directing anything. If he was already preoccupied with something new, it was more likely in the context of a completely new brand - although there are no specific plans for the future yet.

I really wasn't in a mental position to come up with new ideas for games or much less do work on them or direct anything. That’s not the case now. So I am, you know, like I'm helping on Avowed. I am in an advisory role still, but I did a little bit of writing on Avowed. I've helped out with some system design and things like that. Basically, wherever they needed help. I am doing more hands-on work there and then just thinking and talking about ideas for future projects.

I do think that I am more interested in doing original IP necessarily, than existing IP. But we'll see where the future takes me.

Partly for this reason, Sawyer - as he himself said - burned out after working on PoE 2: Deadfire, isn't leading the production of Avowed, but is only helping the team. It's also no secret that the developers likes to experiment. Released in 2022, Pentiment was his passionate project, which turned out to be a relatively big hit - it stuck in the minds of players and was met with good reception.

For now, Sawyer has other things to do, including helping out the devs of Avowed... and, when he finally finds the time, returning to Pikmin 4. Avowed, the new RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, will be released on February 13, 2025, for PC and XSX/S.
