EVE Online Calls Christmas Truce Like in World War I
EVE Online organized a Christmas cease-fire to give a moment of rest to the sides of the galactic war that continued for many months.
Interesting things are happening again in the virtual world of EVE Online. The leaders of the two largest factions in the game have negotiated a Christmas truce to stop a giant war that has lasted for many months.
The inspiration was the famous Christmas truce from World War I, which took place in 1914 between Allied and German troops near the city of Ypres. Soldiers stopped fighting and started to exchange wishes and presents. The dead, whose bodies were lying on no-man's-land, were also collected and buried.
However, the ceasefire in EVE Online differs in one key aspect - the decision about it was made by the faction commanders. During World War I, the truce was the initiative of ordinary soldiers, against the will of the high command.
The current conflict in EVE Online was started by the TEST Alliance group, which together with allies decided to take down Goonswarm Federation once and for all. The scale of the war is enormous - anew Guinness record was established in the category of the biggest online PvP battle. This historic battle took place on October 9, lasted about 14 hours and was attended by a total of 8825 players. At the hottest moment 6557 people fought simultaneously.
Big skirmishes in EVE Online often last many hours, so a Christmas truce seems to be a good idea. The faction leaders rightly decided that their subordinates should spend this time with their families and not in front of the monitors.
Players were instructed not to take any aggressive actions on 24 and 25 December. Both sides also declared that they would not set any timers for future offensives before Christmas. Only defensive actions are to be allowed, in case someone tries to break the truce.
We wonder if both sides of the conflict will maintain the ceasefire. It's EVE Online, so it can't be ruled out that all this is just a trick to allow one of the factions to gain an advantage over their rivals.
