EVE Online Getting Closer to Star Citizen? FPS Module Will be Added
CCP has announced EVE: Vanguard, an online FPS in which skirmishes will impact the EVE Online universe.
Despite several setbacks, CCP Games has not abandoned the idea of creating a first-person shooter in the universe of the space MMO EVE Online. Last year, the devs informed that they were working on a new project of this type, and during the recent EVE Fanfest 2023 event, it was finally officially revealed.
- The project is titled EVE: Vanguard and is being developed on Unreal Engine 5.
- It is not a completely separate game. Instead will be a module accessible through the EVE Online launcher.
- The game is described as PvPvE shooter, meaning that we will battle both other humans and AI-controlled enemies. Teams of players are expected to compete on large maps, filled with tasks to complete and enemy NPCs. The main goal of the game will be to recover valuable items from wrecked spaceships.
- Beta tests will start this December. During them, players will get access to one map, basic gameplay mechanics and a simplified version of the crafting system. After that, new elements will be slowly added.
- The results of skirmishes will influence the situation in EVE Online through the corruption mechanics, which will be introduced to this space MMO by the upcoming Havoc DLC.
CCP Games' difficult history with the FPS genre is worth recalling here. In 2013, an EVE spin-off was released for the PlayStation 3, titled DUST 514. The game remained on the market for three years, after which its servers were shut down. Then, the developers twice announced a PC FPS set in the universe of EVE Online. The first approach was Project Legion, which was an improved version of DUST 514, and the second was an entirely new game, titled Project Nova. Neither of these titles was completed - both were canceled before release. It remains to be hoped that in the case of EVE: Vanguard will be different.
