Space Engineers is a warmly received and well-established title with a big fanbase. Released in 2019, it already feels a bit dated, thus the developers are working on a sequel, simply named Space Engineers 2, that will first be launched in Early Access program on Steam. Big part of sandbox crafting games is their ability to bring people together, to share experiences and work on more intricate structures faster. Of course, many people may know that the first part of this series features coop, so it’s only natural that the sequel will also have this functionality implemented, right? Well, it’s not that easy, so let’s get into more details.

Multiplayer coop in SE2 explained

Space Engineers is a perfect game for a multiplayer. Conquering the vast nothingness of cosmos seems lonely enough, so having a friend or two around for the task would be ideal. That’s probably the reason why the prequel allowed for building new structures together, SE2 does not, though

This is only partially true, as indeed, the sequel does not have coop mode yet. As one of the developers informed in their video on YouTube, Keen Software House focuses on content first. While the production launches in Early Access only with single player mode, they already work hard on preparing multiplayer option.

That means that while SE2 will not allow you to play with your friends on release, it will definitely do so down the road. As stated by the devs, the game already functions by having two components – the client and the server part, which operate locally for now, to be later built upon and expand to fully-fledged online multiplayer mode.

This decision from the creators’ end makes sense, as they would like to concentrate on developing features that will distinguish between the two titles, rather than releasing exactly the same production with multiplayer. Let’s keep cheering on them and showing support, so they can work on coop functionality to make it great.
