Crypt of the NecroDancer
RPG
February 10, 2017
The work of a one-man Canadian studio Brace Yourself Games in the form of a unique independent production that combines features of seemingly contrasting elements of a roguelike RPG and a dancing game. Crypt of the NecroDancer lets us play as a girl named Cadence, who sets on a journey to find her missing father. It leads her to the mysterious crypt ruled by an evil demon known as NecroDancer. It casts an unusual curse on the protagonist, making her heart always beat in rhythm of a music. As far as its mechanics go, NecroDancer is and old school action RPG. We explore procedurally generated dungeons and fight various monsters using weapons and magic. What makes the game unique is the fact that enemies move to the rhythm of music, and Cadence must adjust to their dance to defeat them. Each enemy she encounters has his unique style, and discovering the correct combination of moves is the key to success.

Aaero
Arcade
April 11, 2017
A science-fiction rhythm game developed Mad Fellows. Aaero does not offer an elaborate narrative layer, focusing on allowing the player to control a small ship hovering above ground and fight the enemies that appear on the screen. The ship’s movements can be controlled with the analog sticks. The player is tasked with following the precise track and sticking to a white ribbon, which boosts the score multiplier. Occasionally, the player has to face powerful bosses – fighting these foes revolves around weakening their armor and pieces of skeleton. The key to success lies not only in good reflexes and agility but also good hearing, as the gameplay is accompanied by an audio layer – the more aligned with the rhythm player’s actions are, the higher he scores.

The developers responsible for Superbeat: Xonic are known for DJMax, a popular music game series, and have changed the studio name to Nurijoy in 2014. The gameplay in Superbeat: Xonic is based on pressing in the right moment the discs that move on the screen. Depending on the discs’ colors, we either hold or move some of them in the chosen direction. The creators introduced several difficulty levels, a point system which counts our combinations, and numerous bonuses rewarding player's speed or ability. We can choose from a number of gameplay modes and different songs. Superbeat: Xonic offers over fifty songs composed by Korean performers. Among them, we can find typical pop hits, as well as broadly defined electronic music, or rock. Superbeat: Xonic is full of colored lightning effects, highlighting the disco-electronic design of the game.
