Halo Video Game Series
The best-selling series of first-person shooters (FPS) in the atmosphere of space opera. The brand is in the hands of Microsoft, for which games in the series Halo are among the most important items for Xbox family consoles.
The series debuted in 2001 with the game Halo: Combat Evolved, developed by the Bungie studio as one of the launch titles for the Xbox console entering the market. The production turned out to be a huge hit, which resulted in a conversion to PC (2003), as well as a sequel - Halo. Halo 2 released in 2004 for the Xbox platform, and in 2007 for PC. From Halo 3 (Xbox 360, 2007) the series became an "exclusive" of Xbox-branded consoles for many years. With the departure of the Bungie studio from under the wings of Microsoft, further development of the series was entrusted to the 343 Industries team. The new studio began its adventure with the series with the release in 2011 for the Xbox 360 of a remake of the first part of the series, called Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. The developers then launched the next trilogy, when in 2012 players were hit with Halo 4 (only on the Xbox 360 platform). In 2015, the game was released on XONE Halo 5: Guardians; it was the first full-fledged installment in which the role of the main playable character did not fall to Master Chief. The hero, however, regained his protagonist status in the 2021-released Halo Infinite.
In 2014, the Xbox One console received the following. Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which includes: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 (also the Anniversary version), Halo 3, Halo 4 and Halo 3: ODST. The 2019 pack was also released for PC, becoming a sales hit on Steam. The PC package additionally included Halo: Reach.
In addition to the mainstream releases Halo has lived to see several spin-offs. In 2009, the first real-time strategy (RTS) installment came out for the X360 Halo Wars from Ensemble Studios. Also in 2009, a standalone expansion to the third installment of the main series came exclusively to players on X360 Halo 3: ODST, developed by Bungie. The studio said goodbye to the futuristic action game series with the prequel Halo: Combat Evolved with the title Halo: Reach, released in 2010 on X360. In 2011, the isometric view shooter came to PC, X360, XONE, iOS and WP Halo: Spartan Assault developed by 343 Industries. Two years later (2013), the studio released a sequel titled Halo: Spartan Strike, aimed at PC, iOS and WP. In 2016 (PC and XONE), the following hit store shelves. Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, a refreshed version of the 2009 RTS title developed by 343 Industries. Meanwhile, a year later, a full-fledged second installment of the series was released on PC and XONE, titled Halo Wars 2, this time the creation of the game was handled by Creative Assembly, and its publisher was THQ Nordic. Fans of the universe on personal computers also got in 2016 Halo V: Forge. This is a free map editing tool for the fifth installment of the series, and it also has an independent multiplayer feature.
The action of most games in the series Halo takes place in the XXVI century. The main axis of the plot is the conflict between humans and a theocratic coalition of alien races. The player most often takes on the role of Master Chief John-117, a cybernetically enhanced soldier of the future, who, along with a companion artificial intelligence named Cortana, seeks to confront the Covenants.
Cycle Halo is one of the most popular game series, as evidenced by the number of copies sold. On the day of its release Halo 3 earned $170 million, and the fourth installment of the series topped that number with $220 million. Halo 5 on the other hand, earned $400 million in the first week of its release and achieved the status of the fastest-selling exclusive for the Xbox One platform.
Halo: Combat Evolved is the first installment of the popular shooter series. The game's protagonist is Master Chief, who is a Spartan - a type of super-soldier. The background of the story is the war between the UNSC (humans) and the alliance of Convenant aliens. The plot of the part begins with the fact that the spaceship on which the protagonist is traveling reaches a mysterious structure and crashes into it. Spartan gets under the care of Cortana, an artificial intelligence that knows the location of the Earth, making it impossible for it to fall into enemy hands. From now on, the two don't part, and her task is to find out more about the place where they found themselves.
Halo 2 is a continuation of the series, in which we take turns controlling two heroes. They are Master Chief, the super soldier known from the previous installment, and the commander of the Convenant forces with the rank of Arbiter, who failed to stop the protagonist in Halo: Combat Evolved. The action of the title again revolves around the conflict of the Convenant, in this part directly threatening Earth, and the human forces (UNSC). This installment of the series took a closer look at alien culture and showed that they are not as unanimous as they seemed at first. Despite the fact that we play both Master Chief and Arbiter, the gameplay of both protagonists is very similar. The biggest difference is that the human representative has a flashlight built into his outfit, while the representative of the alien race can become invisible for a while. The game still relies on dynamic exchange of fire and the use of all available tools of destruction. A major novelty, which later appeared in subsequent installments of the series, was the introduction of skulls. These are finds that can slightly change the rules of gameplay.
Halo 3 is the last installment in the main series from the Bungie studio and thus closes the story told in the first trilogy. Once again, we take on the role of Master Chief. A schism has arisen in the Convenant alliance. Humans, together with rebels, are fighting against the aliens, who refuse to believe that Halo is capable of bringing about the destruction of life in the galaxy. The plot of the game revolves around the remnants of space technology that can change the fate of the war. The third installment of the series introduced support weapons: two-handed givens, which, although they limit the protagonist's movements, have powerful firepower. However, this did not supplant the two-handed combat mechanics familiar from previous installments, which allow certain weapons to be wielded one at a time (dual wielding).
Halo 4 is the beginning of a new trilogy by developers from the 343 Industries studio. The action of the title takes place four years after the events of "three". Master Chief is awakened by Cortana from his cryogenic sleep. The AI warns him that they are under attack by Convenant forces (or rather, their remnants). In the midst of the attack, the protagonist discovers a mechanical warrior that was created by a thought to be extinct race of Forerunners, the creators of the Halo design.
Halo 5: Guardians allows us to observe the actions of two squads of Spartans. When the artificial intelligence Cortana, who was thought to be "dead," speaks to Master Chief, he sets out to meet her. After the hero disappears with his team, Spartan Locke follows in his footsteps, leading a group codenamed Osiris. The fifth part of the series permanently assigns us companions to help us, to whom we can give simple orders. When going through the campaign in multiplayer mode, players take on the roles of individual team members. This is the first part of the mainstream games in which the protagonist accompanying us for most of the game is not the Master Chief. It should be noted that the character we direct boasts much greater mobility compared to previous parts of the series.
In the sixth installment of the series with the title Halo Infinite again Master Chief becomes the main playable protagonist. Once again, we face off against the AI Cortana, who wants to introduce a reign of terror in the galaxy. In addition, we will encounter the Banished alien faction, which has so far only appeared in the spin-off Halo Wars 2. The biggest change to the gameplay in Halo Infinite, compared to previous installments, are much larger maps, leaving the player a lot of freedom in exploration.
