Risk of Rain Video Game Series

For the full-fledged second part of the series, i.e. Risk of Rain 2, we had to wait until 2020, when its full version (earlier it could be checked out in Early Access on Steam) hit personal computers and consoles. The title drew handfuls from the legacy of the original, but transferred the mechanics known from it to the field of 3D action platformers. Although this was the first three-dimensional item in the output of Hopoo Games, the authors came out of this clash with a defensive hand. Average ratings from industry media that the game received Risk of Rain 2was 85/100 (for the PC version; according to Metacritic), while on the Steam platform the title enjoyed "overwhelmingly positive" reviews. The project was also a commercial success; suffice it to say that it crossed the barrier of one million copies sold while still in early access.

A new chapter in the history of the series began in November 2022, when Gearbox Entertainment took over the rights. A year later, we lived to see the release of Risk of Rain Returns, a remastered and content-enhanced version of the first installment of the series, prepared for PCs and consoles. The game repeated the commercial and artistic success of the original.

In 2024, however, the first spin-off of the series was released on smartphones and tablets, namely. Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds. We are talking about a free-to-play distributed twin-stick shooter production, enriched with RPG and roguelike elements (and how!). It is worth noting that this position was supervised by a different team - Frima Studio. Despite the change of the main genre, the core of the gameplay remained unchanged compared to the big parts of the series, so the task of the players was once again to roam an alien planet and eliminate hordes of opponents, as well as acquire increasingly better equipment.

Games under the banner of Risk of Rain allow both single and multiplayer play. While the first part of the series and its remaster feature two-dimensional graphics, the second installment of the series and the spin-off from Frima Studio boast three-dimensional settings. Nevertheless, each of these productions is maintained in a colorful, cartoonish style.
