Defcon is the third project of developers from Introversion Software studio, who are behind the creation of Uplink: Trust is a Weakness and Darwinia. The inspiration for this game was undoubtedly the 1983 film War Games (WarGames), and more specifically the scene where the local supercomputer conducted numerous simulations of the global nuclear conflict.

The game was created mainly for multiplayer mode, in which up to four participants can take part.
