October 19, 2017

A top-down shooter developed by Finnish studio 10tons. The title features time control mechanics. The story presented in Time Recoil starts in 1987, where the main protagonist lands due to a time paradox. During the game she must complete a series of missions in the past. This will enable her to change the timeline, save no-longer living allies, obtain lost documents and eliminate important persons before they become a threat. The final objective is to kill Mr. Time who controls a time-based weapon of mass destruction. The female protagonist can move and aim in all directions. When an enemy is killed, the time slows down. The longer the killing chain, the longer this “bullet time” is active. This mechanics introduce a more puzzle approach to shootouts – the player is trying to combine kills in order to finish their actions before the enemies understand what is going on.

January 12, 2017

A classic two-dimensional vertical shoot-em-all, taking place in a science-fiction universe. Xenogears was developed by an independent Finnish studio 10tons. The game takes us to 2032, where a conflict called the first galactic war forces humanity to defend its planet using an improvised fleet consisting of civilian space ships armed with various weaponry. As per the genre staples, the gameplay focuses around elimination of approaching hordes of enemies, interrupted from time to time with boss encounters that require more attention and a bit of tactical approach. Procedurally generated levels are definitely an interesting feature of the game – a level may play out different with every new playthrough, with the players unable to learn the enemies’ behavior by heart. Aside from that, the forces of humanity ale always represented by a wing – four fighters with different weaponry, with the player able to switch to a different unit depending on the type of enemy, or invite his friends to take over the remaining fighters in a local co-op mode.

Shooty Skies

Action

September 29, 2015

A mobile arcade shooter featuring endless runner mechanics, distributed in a free-to-play system with not too obtrusive microtransactions. Shooty Skies was developed by the same team that was responsible for the surprisingly well-received Crossy Road. This time, the player takes control of a character in a flying machine – at the beginning, you’re a cat in a monoplane – and shoots down enemies (including arcade cabinets, giant mouths, huge beavers, computer monitors and such) approaching from the opposite direction as long as he can. Shooty Skies is discerned by its interesting controls. The plane fires automatically, but to move it, we need to swipe our finger. Releasing the finger launches a powerful rocket attack – useful when fighting more powerful opponents – which sadly exposes us to enemy fire, which adds certain tactical depth to this small arcade game. During our run, we encounter various upgrades and items spawning allied wingmen. Shooty Skies is also distinguished by its colorful visuals, build from huge voxels.

AirAttack 2

Action

December 5, 2015

An old-school shoot 'em up game created by Art In Games. The game provides a continuation to the 2010 game AirAttack. AirAttack 2 does not feature any specific story as such, and the player assumes the role of a pilot who fights against the air forces of the Axis. The game is set in an exaggerated alternative vision of the Second World War, albeit some machines using technology that didn't exist back then were included nonetheless, as the creators were not particularly interested in recreating the realities of war with historical accuracy. The in-game mechanics were based on the classic, popular formula - the action is viewed from above and the player's task is to shoot the enemies coming in waves. What's more, the player will also encounter boss fights, collect valuable power-ups and avoid enemy attacks. The game offers five different fighter planes, which can be additionally upgraded as the game progresses. Different improvements can be employed, such as installation of lasers, flamethrowers, tail cannons, homing missiles or bomb bays.
