Indiana Jones and the Great Circle review - Love letter to fans of film trilogy
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle grabs the hearts of fans of the famous archaeologist from the very first minutes. However, MachineGames' game falls a little below expectations. It sits on the border of an action game and an adventure game.

VGC: 5 / 5 by Jordan Middler
We had a smile on our face from beginning to end while playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. As close as games can come to a genuine old-fashioned Hollywood blockbuster, it's also an incredibly rich adventure game stuffed to the gills with secrets to find.
WayTooManyGames: 9 / 10 by Jordan Hawes
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an absolute Indy classic that perfectly sits itself between Raiders and Crusade for the best Indy adventures. MachineGames stays 100% faithful to Indiana Jones and for some that may be good or bad. For me, this is exactly what I wanted in an Indiana Jones adventure, and while I would like maybe a bit more fleshed out combat, and some smarter AI, I couldn’t ask for a better world trotting adventure.
Jump Dash Roll: 9 / 10 by Pete Taylor
If you're a fan of the movies you will be overjoyed at just how complete Indy's adventure is in The Great Circle. However, even if you're not, what we have here is arguably one of the best adventure games we've had in a long, long while.
The main pros of the game
- Immersive Experience: Many players felt that the game captures the essence of the Indiana Jones films, providing a cinematic experience that feels like stepping into a movie.
- Graphics and Sound Design: The visuals are praised for being stunning, with high-quality graphics that enhance the gameplay experience. The sound design, including the iconic whip crack and voice acting, has also received high praise.
- Engaging Story: The narrative is considered compelling, with well-developed characters and a plot that fits well within the Indiana Jones universe.
- Gameplay Variety: Users appreciated the mix of stealth, exploration, and combat, allowing players to approach situations in multiple ways. The puzzles, while not overly challenging, were deemed enjoyable and well-integrated into the story.
- Character Portrayals: The voice acting, especially Troy Baker's performance as Indiana Jones, was highlighted as a standout feature, capturing the character's charm and wit.
The main cons of the game
- AI and Combat Mechanics: Several reviews mentioned issues with enemy AI, describing it as inconsistent or "janky." Combat was also criticized for being somewhat repetitive, with some players feeling that gunplay was underwhelming compared to melee combat.
- Pacing Issues: Some users found the game to be slow-paced, particularly in the early hours, leading to moments of tedium during exploration and traversal.
- Technical Issues: A few players reported bugs, frame rate drops, and performance inconsistencies, particularly on lower-end hardware. There were also complaints about the lack of options for saving and navigating the game.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Complex Stealth Mechanics: Users expressed a desire for more advanced stealth mechanics, such as leaning or more interactive enemy AI that could chase players more effectively.
- Difficulty Options: Some players felt that the game could benefit from more difficulty settings, particularly for combat, to provide a more challenging experience.
- Save System Improvements: A common critique was the reliance on checkpoint saving, with requests for a more flexible save system that allows players to save at will.
- Replayability Elements: While the game offers side quests, some users felt that there could be more incentive to replay the game beyond collecting artifacts, as the collectibles didn't always lead to satisfying rewards.
Summary
- Overall, "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" is seen as a well-crafted tribute to the franchise, with a mix of engaging gameplay and immersive storytelling, although it has room for improvement in certain areas.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Description
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a single-player action-adventure game developed by Machine Games studio, known for its successful productions under the Wolfenstein brand (starting with The New Order from 2014). The game was published by Bethesda Softworks and its executive producer was Todd Howard, who also oversaw the development of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, among others. It was released under the Lucasfilm Games brand, which was reactivated in January 2021.
Story
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is not an adaptation of any film, but tells a completely new story featuring the famous adventurer. The action of the game is set in 1937, between the events presented in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
After witnessing a break-in to Marshall College, confronting a mysterious thug, and having a seemingly insignificant artifact stolen, Indy finds himself on the trail of the titular Great Circle, which is associated with an ancient power. The protagonist must hurry to find the Great Circle before the Nazis following his trail achieve the same goal, intending to use it for their evil purposes. Jones is not condemned to a solitary ordeal. He can count on the help of the game's second protagonist - Gina.
Gameplay
In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for most of the time we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The camera changes to third-person perspective (TPP) only during certain actions, for example while climbing. The search for the Great Circle leads us to various places - from the Vatican, through Egypt, ending at the submerged temples of Sukhothai in Thailand.
By exploring them and carrying out the missions set before us, we must avoid traps and terrain obstacles, jump over abysses and also deal with enemies. Although there is nothing to prevent us from engaging in open conflict (fighting with fists or shooting firearms), often a better solution is to sneak behind the enemy's back and eliminate them by surprise. The semi-open structure of the visited locations encourages experimenting with various solutions to problems.
Environmental puzzles also play an important role here. Among them, we will find both puzzles necessary to push the action forward, as well as various optional challenges, hiding precious secrets. The icing on the cake are the spectacular action scenes straight out of Indiana Jones movies.
Our main tool is a whip, which we use while exploring (swinging over chasms, climbing to higher ledges), during combat and to distract enemies. In addition to this, we can make use of throwing weapons and melee weapons (like hammers or spades).
Cast
The face of the titular character was modeled after movie star Harrison Ford, but he speaks with the voice of the popular actor Troy Baker.
Engine
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is powered by the id Tech engine, created by id Software studio.
