Pharaoh: A New Era
Pharaoh returns to take the rightful spot on the throne of city builders. The game has some shortcomings, but it is still a great remake. A New Era treats the source material with respect, at the same time making it more accessible.
The main pros of the game
- Nostalgia and Classic Appeal: Many users appreciate the remastering of a beloved classic, highlighting its nostalgic value and connection to childhood memories.
- Visual and Technical Improvements: The game features updated graphics and a modernized user interface, which have been well-received by players.
- Engaging Gameplay: Players find the city-building mechanics enjoyable and addictive, with many hours of gameplay available.
- Less Frustration in Battles: Some users appreciate the new combat system, which they feel reduces frustration compared to the original.
- Clear Tutorials: The game includes clear tutorials, making it accessible to both new and returning players.
The main cons of the game
- Game-Breaking Bugs: Many users report encountering significant bugs that hinder gameplay, such as mission glitches and issues with resource imports.
- Simplified Combat System: Some players are disappointed with the changes to the combat system, feeling it has been overly simplified or made less interactive.
- Notification Overload: Several reviews mention annoying notification pop-ups that detract from the gaming experience.
- Repetitive Missions: Some users feel that missions can be repetitive, with reused maps and objectives that lack variety.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Original Combat Mechanics: Players miss the more complex and interactive combat system from the original game, preferring a more engaging experience rather than an auto-resolve option.
- Map Rotation: Users have noted the inability to rotate the map, which can make it difficult to view certain areas, particularly with taller buildings.
- Challenges and Time Limits: Some players expressed a desire for the return of specific challenges from the original game, such as time limits on missions that added an extra layer of difficulty.
- Improved Bug Fixes and Support: There is a general sentiment that the game has not been adequately patched or supported post-launch, leading to ongoing frustrations with bugs.
Summary
- Overall, while Pharaoh?: A New Era is praised for its nostalgic charm and improvements, it is also criticized for technical issues and changes that some fans feel detract from the original experience.

Pharaoh: A New Era Description
Pharaoh: A New Era is a remake of the iconic city builder Pharaoh and its expansion, Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile. It was developed by Triskell Interactive (also responsible for the Lethis series), improving the original game's graphics, audio and modernising some mechanics.
Plot
As the title suggests, Pharaoh: A New Era takes place in ancient Egypt. During the story campaign consisting of over fifty missions, the player learns the game's basics as well as the country's history, from its foundation to Cleopatra's reign.
Mechanics
The gameplay of Pharaoh: A New Era is shown from the top-down perspective. The player's job is to build thriving cities. Transforming a small settlement into a mighty metropolis requires us to handle the city in its entirety. We must extract resources, construct new buildings, roads and supply chains, take care of farming (which is almost entirely dependent on the Nile overflowing), trading as well as defend our territory and recruit soldiers. As a ruler, it is our duty to work for the benefit of our people, fulfilling their needs and desires.
Our plans, however, aren't immune to plagues and natural disasters, with hail, locusts and other events having long-term effects on the country. If everything's going accordingly to plan and we have money to spare (there are indicators which clearly and umambiguously inform us about our city's condition), we can show off our might to the world by warring with other civilizations on land and on sea or creating monuments such as pyramids, the Sphinx or the Alexandrian lighthouse.
Game modes
In addition to the singleplayer campaign, Pharaoh: A New Era features an extensive editor letting us create our own scenarios.
Technical aspects
The visuals of Pharaoh: A New Era and its interface have been adapted to 4K. Higher resolution isn't all the game has to offer; the entire visual layer was thoroughly refreshed, making the graphics sharp and clear. The soundtrack also received a new arrangement, while the user interface and controls were adapted to modern standards.
