Diablo Video Game Series
A series of action RPG games considered by many fans to be the absolute canon of the genre. The brand was created by the American company Blizzard Entertainment, responsible for the creation of all the main installments of the series.
The first game in the series, Diablo, was released in 1996 on PC and almost immediately gained the sympathy of thousands of players. This resulted in, among other things, a conversion for the PlayStation console and the addition of the Hellfire, as well as a sequel released four years later - Diablo II. Diablo II, for which an expansion was also prepared - Lord of Destruction. Work on the next full installment of the series lasted more than 11 years. Finally, the premiere of Diablo III on PC took place in 2012, and for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles in 2013. A year later, a special edition appeared, entitled Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition, designed for players with Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3. It is worth noting that the purchase of this edition for console players is the only way to play the add-on Reaper of Souls, as it has not been released as a standalone version. In 2017, another special edition saw the light of day, titled Diablo III: Eternal Collection, containing the package Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition expanded with the addition of Awakening of the Necromancers. Like its predecessor, this one was also prepared for consoles - PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - with Nintendo Switch owners joining a year later. In November 2018, during the popular BlizzCon convention, a spin-off of the series intended for mobile devices was announced - Diablo Immortal. Diablo Immortal (launching in 2022). Chinese company NetEase, which specializes in free-to-play productions aimed at the East Asian market, is also partly responsible for its creation. A year later, work was announced on the fourth full-fledged installment of the series - Diablo IV returned to the series' dark roots, and several former CD Projekt RED employees took an active part in its creation.
The series is classified as an action RPG - all the installments combine elements typical of hack'n'slash (dynamic real-time battles) and RPG (hero development, missions, multitude of items and weapons, etc.). The plot Diablo revolves around the fight against the titular demon, trying to break out of captivity and take over the fantastic world of Sanctuary. The events of the second part are directly related to the plot of the predecessor, as it turns out that the defeat of Diablo was only apparent, and the title demon, having regained full strength, plans to liberate his brothers - Baal and Mephisto. The action of the third installment begins twenty years after the events known from Diablo II, when a mysterious comet falls from the sky and hits straight into the cathedral in the city of Tristram, thus awakening an army of demons. Story Diablo Immortal takes place between the events known from Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and Diablo IIIand tells the story of the fight against a surviving demon named Skarn, who is Diablo's sidekick.
A common feature of the games in the series is the ability to direct the actions of a daredevil who must oppose evil. The player can choose from several character classes with different skills and fighting styles. During the game the hero accumulates experience, which allows him to increase his psychophysical coefficients and master new abilities. Wandering through vast locations, full of enemies, he can also gain valuable items, including many types of magical weapons and armor. The graphic design of all parts, showing the game world in isometric projection, is distinguished by an exceptionally dark style. The locations presented in the game are randomly generated, so they look slightly different each time.
Along with the release of Diablo III, which became one of the biggest events in the industry for several years, the series underwent major changes. In addition to a vastly improved visual layer (changed to a more fairy-tale-like one), a number of community elements appeared in the game, allowing, among other things, to trade virtual items and duels in the PvP system (player versus player). Also new is a system of companions, a source of power unique to each character (shaman - mana, monk - spiritual power, etc.), or the ability to impersonate any gender chosen by the player for each of the available classes.
The extraordinary popularity of the series was also reflected in other media. In the universe of Diablo many comic books and books were set, expanding the lore of the series.
It is estimated that players have purchased nearly 50 million copies of games in the series Diablo (of which the third part alone is more than 30 million copies).
