The key to success in the case of virtually each counter-attack lies in extracting the ball from the line of defense in front of your goal and playing a pass that would open the way for an action of your choice. The greatest number of ways to surprise opponents is created by playing the ball along the center of the field - this gives you an opportunity to run a long distance with the ball, while defenders are retreating. You can also play the ball to the sides or pass the ball to the forwarding striker. The way of playing the ball depends only on your idea on the attack.
