NOTES
The 30-million mark was achieved in 2015, and includes the Reaper of Souls DLC. It's likely that this result is slightly higer today.
Diablo is as legendary, widely-recognized an IP as you can get, despite the regular controversies that Blizzard, it's developer and publisher, seems to get involved in every now and then. These included the announcement of a mobile game when everyone expected a major installment, or the avalanche of criticism that befell after the release of Diablo III – an installment that fans waited 12 years for. Despite complaints about the requirement of being online, about the loot system, the way the auction house worked, and many changes in gameplay formula compared to the cult second game, fans eagerly ran to the stores, and the rest caught up with time. Thanks to this, Diablo III reached at least 30 million players, and Blizzard could boast the record of the fastest-selling PC game for a long time, with 3.5 million copies sold on day one.
It should also be noted that in the following years the creators devoted a lot of time and energy to refine or even repair their work, often listening to the feedback of the community. Also significant was the creation of a port for PlayStation 3 and 4, as well as Xbox 360 and One, and the release of the Reaper of Souls expansion pack. The immense popularity of consoles has certainly affected the number of copies sold of this, once strictly PC, game. It will be interesting to see if the next installment breaks Diablo III's records...
