Borderlands 2

Developer: Gearbox Software

Year of release: 2012

Estimated number of copies sold: 22 million

Borderlands 2 is something of an odd duck here. Many players consider the game a simple shooter, but in fact, there are so many RPG elements to it that we decided to include it here. The game has character development, weapons dealing specific amounts of damage, main and side quests, an open world, a fairly extensive plot with well-written antagonists, most notably Handsome Jack, and a whole lot of other, typical RPG mechanics. The player takes on the role of one of four characters with different skills. The choice of the hero affects the style of the game, although it is mainly about gunplay.

The hallmark of Borderlands franchise is the multitude of available weapons. The weapons are randomly-generated and the combinations are basically endless. Therefore, a small pistol can act like a sniper rifle, and a shotgun can be modded to fire at the rate of a rifle. However, the creativity of the devs was much greater, which can also be seen in the crazy appearance of the weapons. Despite all the years, the game still feels relevant and fun. This is in no small part due to the cell-shaded graphics. Today, we recommend Borderlands 2 to all who missed this installment. The fun will be even better if you play online with friends.
