Sunny Islands – Darkest Dungeon

  1. Core game: Darkest Dungeon
  2. Has the project evolved into a standalone title: No

The Sun Islands (sometimes also translated as the Sun Islands) brings not only new enemies, skills, and a great region, but also an entire story campaign. This mod, inspired by Japanese mythology, brings a lot of freshness to the game. I've spent a good 20 hours there myself, am not even halfway through, and I didn't feel tired for a second. And that's not a statement I could have made after the lengthy dungeon sections of the original.

In fact, Sunny Islands could easily be a paid DLC. The enormous amount of work that the creators put into perfecting every detail is simply stunning. Everything here is different than in the basic version of the game – traps, loot and, of course, the enemies – perfectly balanced and able to beat even the most experienced dungeon-crawlers.

With all this variety, the Sunward Isles still remains the Darkest Dungeon. I have no idea how the developers managed to tell a story inspired by completely different sources, without depriving their mod of consistency with the core game. But they did, and you shouldn't play Darkest Dungeon without venturing into the Sunshine Islands. It just isn't right!
