AC Odyssey: How to recognize other ships on the sea?

While sailing around the game world you can attack all other ships you meet or try to sink selected ships, which may be related, for example, to your quest objectives. This chapter explains how to recognize the flag of other ships.
The most universal method is to help yourself with Icaros the eagle. Your pet can "scan" other ships within Adrestia's range. However, using his help is not obligatory, because you can also determine such information without the aid of your scouting eagle.
Spartan Ships have a red flag.
Athenian chips have blue flags.
Merchant's vessels don't have any colorful markings of flags. The easiest way to recognize them is by the fact that they will not attack (being unprovoked) the Adrestia.
Pirate ships start fighting as soon as the hero's ship is within their range.
