World War Z gives the players access to dozens of different weapons and equipment types, allowing anyone to find the best gear for themselves to fight against the zombies. The game also implements a basic weapon development system, in which the players can increase the effectiveness of firearms as they use them more often. How to develop a weapon?

Almost all firearms in the game (aside from the heavy ones) can be developed. This is done simply by using a specific weapon - killing enemies with it will give the weapon experience points proportional to the amount of made kills. Once a specific amount of experience points is acquired, the weapon will advance to a higher level, unlocking a development point. Killing regular zombies with will give you 1 EXP (3 for a headshot), while taking out a special infected will net you between 10 and 15 experience points, depending on the type of the enemy. The difficulty level, however, does not influence the amount of weapon experience points you will receive.

Weapons acquire experience points in accordance to the amount of kills you made.

This point can then be used to customize the weapon. This can mean increasing the magazine size of the weapon, improving its stats (damage, handling, accuracy) or giving it special properties, like a silencer. Weapon levels differ when it comes to specific firearms and can reach from 2 to 5 and on most levels you will have two upgrades, offering different bonuses, to choose from.

Note - the upgrade is permanent, you cannot reset it.

Weapon development - tips

As weapon development is one of the most important aspects of the gameplay - due to it having a huge impact on the overall effectiveness of your character in combat - it is worth knowing how and when to use it. In order to make the best use of the mechanic, you should keep in mind the following:

• Unlocking mods for weapons cost Supplies. The amount of Supplies required increases with the level of the upgrade. Think twice before unlocking a mod to prevent yourself from running out of money.
• Focus on upgrading weapons you tend to use the most. There are dozens of firearms to upgrade in the game and you will not be able to upgrade them all at the same time. Maximize the effectiveness of your favorite weapons and start upgrading others when you are done doing it.
• Most upgrades will give you two options to choose from. In most cases it will be about increasing the power/handling of the weapon or the amount of ammo in the magazine. Try to focus on the upgrades that you will benefit the most from - increase the accuracy of the weapon that severely needs it or the magazine size of a firearm that has only several bullets in the clip.
