Melee combat basics
The game will teach you all the basic attacks and moves during the training with Master Sanjuro at the beginning of the game. The basics of the combat system aren't very complicated:
- Hiroki can perform light and heavy attacks. They assigned to separate buttons.
- You can combine attacks into combos. You can perform the same attack a few times (e.g. a series of light attacks) or combine different types of attacks (e.g. two light attacks followed by one heavy attack). The combinations allow you to perform more attacks in a short time and can also, for example, be used to stun the enemy (more about this later).
- Hiroki can use blocks, parries and dodges to defend himself. We have described all these movements in more detail in one of the following subsections.
- An important element of the combat is the ability to turn the hero left or right to face the opponent and avoid getting hit in the back. As you progress through the game, you can unlock special moves that allow you to perform a rotation combined with 1 or more attacks.
- Attacking and blocking consumes the stamina bar - don't deplete all of it. Your character will get tired and you will only be able to parry single attacks. Stamina restores automatically after a short while.
Katana combinations
Only the weakest enemies can be killed with single attacks. In other situations, you will have to use combos to defeat opponents. In the early stages of the game, you will learn three useful combinations that you should use regularly:
- Basic light attacks combination - A series of 2 attacks, but there are 3 variants - without selecting the direction, an upward and a downward versions. It is worth trying all its varieties and choosing your favorite.
- Stun combo - 3 attacks that have a chance to stun the enemy and can be followed with a finishing attack. More detail on the Armored enemies - how to defeat? page since this attack works great on them.
- Rotation attack - The hero is turning in the opposite direction and doing 1 or more slashes. This is move is very useful when Hiroki is attacked from both sides simultaneously. You can attack right away, not just after turning.
Enemy types
The opponents can be divided into four main groups:
- Standard opponents - You can deal with them using single attacks or combinations. On their own they are usually not a big problem, but they can appear in groups which makes them more dangerous.
- Armored enemies - They are much more durable; you should use stun combos. "Elite" enemies can also use spears and other similar weapons. This means that they can hurt you from a greater distance.
- Ranged opponents - Regardless of who you are dealing with (e.g. archer or sniper with ozutsu), you can still attack them first with a ranged weapon or sprint towards them. In the latter case, the key is to roll at the right moment to avoid getting hit.
- Bosses - Each of the seven chapters ends with a boss fight. You can also encounter mini-bosses. The bosses often have unique attacks - we have discussed them in detail in the walkthrough.
Parrying, blocks and dodges
Besides attacking enemies, in Trek to Yomi, you must also remember about defense and use moves that will allow you to stop enemy attacks. You can use the 3 following actions:
- Parry - Mastering them is probably the most important element of the game, because you will have to defeat many stronger or elite enemies by relying on them. As a reminder, you do a parry by pressing the block button just before the enemy's attack hits you. In addition to stopping it, you get a chance to counterattack. Practice parrying on the easy bandits in chapters 1 and 2 to avoid problems with parrying in later chapters. It is worth noting that as you play through the game, you will unlock improved parry that allows you to deflect the attack regardless of its direction, i.e. enemies standing behind Hiroki's back.
- Block - They are a much safer solution than parries, but unlike them, they do not allow you to go straight to counter. We recommend using blocks during fights with enemies who perform a series of quick attacks that may be difficult to parry. However, watch out for the strong attacks of some enemies, which, despite blocking them, can stun the hero for a moment.
- Roll - They are most useful during battles with enemies that attack from a distance, but you can also use them, for example, to avoid area attacks or extremely strong attacks from bosses and other elite opponents.
Unlocking new attacks
When starting a new game, the number of skills you know will be very limited. However, you will be able to acquire new ones. This topic is described in more detail on the Character progression page. In short - you can get new attacks in two ways:
- By eliminating certain enemies - After winning the battle, you can receive information about unlocking access to a new move.
- By finding scrolls - They will unlock 1 new skill.
Each new attack should be practiced immediately so that you know how to use it. Some of the unlocked attacks can also be stronger versions of the already known ones, e.g. being able to perform more attacks within a single combo.
Ranged weapons
Katana is the main weapon of the main character, but it is not the only weapon to deal with enemies in battles. You can also do ranged attacks with 3 different weapons. It is worth using them regularly, because each weapon has a limited ammo (you can increase it by finding upgrades - collectibles). When you ammo supplies are full, you will not be able to take any more.
The ranged weapons available in the game are:
- Bo-Shurikens - They are too weak to kill enemies right away, but they have another huge advantage - they can stop enemy attacks. This may allow you to avoid taking damage and/or start a quick counterattack.
- Bow - This weapon has various uses, e.g. stealth kills, long shots, or during regular battles. Arrows can kill normal enemies, but only hurt armored and elite ones.
- Ozutsu - This is a cannon that is very slow to operate, mainly due to long reload times. However, it has enormous firepower. You can use it during fights with bosses and groups of enemies (kills a few enemies with one shot!), but always stand far away from them so that they don't get close before you fire.
Death and its consequences
Trek to Yomi is a demanding production in which your character can die often, even while playing on the normal difficulty level. This is because mastering the basics of combat (especially perfect parries) takes some time, and many opponents also have tricky quick combos.
The good news is that dying in the game doesn't come with any serious consequences. You do not have to worry that you will lose some unique items or things related to character progression like, for example, in the Dark Souls series. When Hiroki dies, you will return to the last shrine - they act as save points. You will only have to repeat the last part of the stage. The only difficulty is that there are a few places in the game where the shrines are distant from each other. A death may then mean the need to repeat a larger section.
The game saves all collectibles you picked up automatically - you don't have to worry about losing them when Hiroki dies. You may, however, be forced to collect ammunition again from the same locations as before you died.
