Chapter Six - The Hamleighs The Pillars of the Earth Guide
Last update: 14 August 2017
In this chapter you will find full walkthrough of Chapter Six – The Hamleighs (Winchester courtyard; prison cell; palace of Bishop Waleran Bigod):
Earl’s confession
The bishop will give you a mission, and before you go to Bartholomew’s cell, take a look around the courtyard. You can eavesdrop two groups of noblemen and a knight (on the left of the two bishops). Head to the other part of the courtyard (left).
You will come across the Hamleighs but ignore them for now and focus on the guard blocking your path to the prison. Use clues regarding Bartholomew’s confession on him. Once in the earl’s cell, select the dialogue options as you please – one way, or another, Philip will complete his mission.
Find out what Waleran is hiding.
Exit the cell and speak with Lord and Lady Hamleigh, located on the left. Regardless of how the conversation ends, you will set out with their son, William. Use the map to select further stages of your path (just like you did before). You will need to make two decisions: The first one when William begins to abuse one of the washerwomen – you can tell him to behave himself or ignore the situation. The second decision will take place when William meets a man called the horse-thief – you can keep your distance or get closer and find out what they are up to.
In the end, you will reach Waleran’s palace. Once William gets inside, investigate his horse, located by the building on the right. Philip will find a letter from William’s travelling bag (another item).
Head towards the gate on the left (fence surrounding the palace). Cross the bridge, and once you are on the other side of the ditch (area where all the trees were cut down), look around. You will notice an unknown shape in the mist (in the distance). Soon, Philip will realize that it is a construction site.
Convince William to return
Use the bridge to get back to the courtyard, and use the stairs to reach the middle building. Speak with William and choose the available dialogue options as you please. In order to find out more about bishop’s plans, interact with his servant, Timothy, and use clues regarding Waleran’s construction on him. Turns out, that Bigod is building a castle.
Clean the mess the nobleman left behind on the table. Pick up the dirty plate, the fallen chalice and the knife (if you put all these items back on the table, Philip will place them in a more appropriate way – this will unlock Everything’s in order achievement. You may also keep the items in your inventory – if during your previous visit, you took some apples and hay, you can leave the chamber to unlock Friar Tuck achievement).
Finally, convince William, who doesn’t want to go out, to investigate the stone relief (on the right), and flames in the chimney (on the left). (If you don’t ask Timothy about the construction site or steal any of the items, you will make a positive impression on the servant).
Get back to Winchester, and speak with the Hamleighs once again. You can accept their offer right away, bargain to get a better deal for the monastery (unlocks Negotiation skills), or even reject the offer.
Speak with the bishop
March for the stronghold (cursor at the bottom of the screen). Tell both bishops that the earl confessed that he was guilty, and don’t forget about his wish concerning the children. You can also irritate Waleran and mention the castle. Finish the conversation by choosing: “leave the castle and come back the next day”.
Stand in front of the king the next day, and choose dialogue options as you please. You can mention the cathedral, dirty monk’s habit or Robert of Gloucester (the last option will leave an impression).
