Chapter Five - Man in flames The Pillars of the Earth Guide
Last update: 14 August 2017
In this chapter you will find full walkthrough of Chapter Five – Man in flames (Kingsbridge):
Take care of the refugees
Regardless of Philip’s opinion on the refugees, citizens of Earlscastle will be relocated to a village, near the monastery. Speak with the brothers and three loaves of bread will be added to Philip’s inventory. Check on the refugees – they are located by bonfires.
These camps are: refugees by the windmill (on the right), hungry women and children (by the first bottom hut, on the right), a group of refugees (by the first bottom hut, on the left), a dying man with a child (between two previous camps), children without parents (by the second bottom hut, on the left) and wounded people (on the left from the orphans). Out of these six groups, you will need to decide on three that you will share bread with. Philip’s notes on refugees will be added to your “Items” tab.
Speak with Tom and choose the dialogue options as you please.
Find a way to help Tom
As Jack, speak with Ellen and Tom, and choose the dialogue options as you please. Before you begin exploring the area, give sleepy Martha your slingshot (you will unlock Care, like a brother cares achievement if you demonstrated your shooting skills previously). Speak with the old monk (on the left) – you may swear that you will dig a grave for him if he dies, or reject his offer.
Take a look at the dilapidated tower on the left. As the main cathedral gate, and doors leading to the cloister and the kitchen are locked, take the path around the cathedral (on the left). Talk to the monk in the graveyard (you can tell him about your real origin, or pretend that you are one of the refugees – required to unlock the achievement).). Use the side door (on the left) to reach the cloister. Try to sneak into the cathedral – unfortunately, Remigius (the bad monk), who is having a conversation with Philip (the good monk), will notice Jack. When he asks you a question, tell him your real name or suggest that you are Tom’s relative (you will unlock Boy of mistery achievement if Jack did not reveal the truth about his past).
Use the cloister door (on the right, in the back) and get to the cathedral. Take the bowl located not far from the altar – on the bench, by the bishop’s throne (on the right), and the burning candle from the altar. Approach the main door (on the right) and use your bowl to take some water from the stoup (a basin of water). Use the stairs (on the right of the altar) to access the attic.
Read the text (right side of the window) – inscription will be added to your “Items” tab. Investigate an abandoned nest (on the left side of the window). Set it on fire with the candle – you can still change your mind: choose “Don’t do it” (unlock Twist of fate achievement), or select whether you do it for Tom or the mother.
Get out
You can try to extinguish the fire with water from the bowl but it won’t take you far. Get back downstairs, and try to access the cloister through the door you used previously – unfortunately, the door is locked. The main gate is also locked. You could go to the crypt but that’s just a dead end – you won’t find an exit there.
Access the attic once again, approach the window and use the hole in the wall (on the left). From there, after an interesting meeting, reach the ground (adjust the cursor bellow the bar Jack is standing on).
What now?
As Philip, finish the letter – choose the available options as you please: you can make Francis responsible for the situation, or you may decide not to (this will affect the plot). Ellen can stay (if you found out that she is not Tom’s wife), or you can send her away. Finally, you can tell your brother about the child, or skip this topic.
Draw your attention (RMB) to one of the interactive objects: the window, doors, the letter, tome on the table, books on the bookcase, or the bed – the monk will notice a strange smell. Open the window and Philip will realize that there is a fire (you will get the same effect by clicking any of these objects with LMB).
Speak with Tom and choose dialogue options as you please. Look through the hole in the cane and decide what you can see.
