Hacking and opening locks in The Outer Worlds will allow you to get to locked spaces, get better equipment, or access a computer. During the game you will constantly encounter closed boxes and containers or locked terminals - so it is worth to learn how to open locks and how to hack. How to open locks?
To open closed doors, containers or boxes it is necessary to develop Lockpicking and Mag-Picks skills. When approaching the closed lock, you will see what requirements you need to fulfill to open it. This is the required skill level as well as the number of lock picks. If you meet the requirements, you can proceed to the opening - the required number of lock picks will be removed from Your inventory and the lock will be opened.
The development of opening locks skills not only allows you to open more advanced locks, but also provides additional bonuses:

20 | Allows you to open doors and containers that require 1 Mag-pick without using this item |
40 | You find 25% more bits in containers |
60 | Allows you to check the contents of containers before opening them |
80 | The speed of opening locks becomes nearly instant |
100 | Chance to find an item in pristine condition is increased by 100% |
How to hack terminals?
Hacking terminals is very similar to the opening of the locks. In this case, you need to develop the Hacking skill and have Bypass Shunts - these items can be found across the in-game world as well as purchased from some vendors. You will recognize the locked terminal by the closed lock icon. When approaching such a terminal, you will learn what skill level and how many conductors are required for hacking. If these conditions are met, the terminal will be fully accessible (remember that the required number of Shunts will disappear from your inventory).
Like the ability to open locks, the hacking ability also offers special bonuses during development:

60 | Allows you to hack the Automechanicals and disabling them for 3 seconds |
80 | Reduces the detection range of the Automechanicals by 30% |
100 | Increases the range of hacking Automechanicals by 2.5 meters (5 meters in total) |
